J.J. McCarthy Dominates Practice

Vikings Quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been seen dominating during practices.

Vikings Second-Year quarterback J.J. McCarthy is dominating early offseason practices, quickly establishing himself as a rising star in Minnesota’s quarterback room.  The No. 11 overall pick is coming off an injured rookie season, but this offseason he has impressed coaches and teammates alike with his poise, arm strength, and sharp decision-making.

McCarthy has been getting a healthy dose of first-team reps and is making the most of them firing accurate passes and showing strong chemistry with top targets, including Justin Jefferson.  Head coach Kevin O’Connell praised the young QB’s confidence and command, calling his development “right on schedule.”

J.J. McCarthy enters the 2025 season as a high-upside rookie quarterback worth monitoring in fantasy formats, especially in superflex and dynasty leagues.

J.J. McCarthy 'Faster and Stronger' Headed into 2025
1 month ago

When asked if J.J. McCarthy felt “faster and stronger” this offseason, the quarterback responded in the affirmative.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy met briefly with reporters after the team’s OTAs on Wednesday. One reporter commented on his preparation and that he looks “faster and stronger” than last offseason, which McCarthy agreed with. He cited his workout regimen along with the rehab he’s done for a torn meniscus, which derailed his rookie campaign for all of the 2024 season.

“I would say just naturally, age, you know? Being able to be here the entire offseason, work out five days a week and consistently stack those days because over time it’s (going to) show up (in) how I feel right now. But we still have a lot more to go with that and I’m excited to continue that process.”

McCarthy also detailed his tireless work with the playbook and his ability to stay in the right mindset throughout his time off. He is expected to begin the season free from restrictions and is chomping at the bit to show how his preparation has paid off.

JJ McCarthy Compared to Matthew Stafford by Teammate
2 months ago

Vikings tight end TJ Hockenson compared teammate JJ McCarthy’s passes to Matthew Stafford.

As a guest on The Green Light podcast with Chris Long, Vikings tight end TJ Hockenson compared passes from his teammate JJ McCarthy to those of former teammate Matthew Stafford.

“I remember catching passes from Staff (Matt Stafford)… it zips on you, looks like it’s not coming, but it’s coming. JJ has the juice behind it where it kind of has that effect.” said Hockenson.

This is high praise from a teammate, as Stafford has always had one of the most talented arms in the NFL. McCarthy missed the entire 2024 season due to a torn meniscus, so any good news is a positive coming into the season. The Vikings seem poised to enter the season with McCarthy as the starting quarterback.

JJ McCarthy’s fantasy outlook looks positive, with weapons like wide receivers Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Hockenson, and running back Aaron Jones. Even with no starts under his belt, McCarthy has some margin of error to start the season. He should settle in as it progresses. McCarthy also has some athletic ability to gain key yards rushing.  The Ikings signal-caller could finish around QB15 with top 10 potential.

J.J. McCarthy is Rising Up Underdog Boards
3 months ago

With the path to starter status clearing day by day, Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is seeing a rise in draft stock.

The answer to who will be the starting quarterback in Minnesota gets clearer by the day. With the Vikings letting Sam Darnold walk in free agency and holding off from signing Aaron Rodgers, the easy deduction is that J.J. McCarthy will be the starting quarterback in 2025.

In addition to the Vikings letting Darnold and Rodgers come and go from their view, they also didn’t pursue re-signing Daniel Jones with much aggression. This has had an impact on McCarthy’s draft stock on Underdog. Since March 9th, McCarthy has risen 7.5 spots in ADP from QB-23 to QB-22 in round 12.

McCarthy is being selected just behind the Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa and ahead of the Panthers Bryce Young. J.J. McCarthy’s 108.2 athleticism score ranked 2nd in the 2024 quarterback class and is 13th in all time rank from Player Profiler’s pool of 297 quarterbacks. Factor in being able to throw to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson as supporting weapons creates a recipe for mass success in 2025. There is plenty of meat on the bone in round 12 to continue clicking J.J. McCarthy at current cost.

Rondale Moore Signs with the Minnesota Vikings
3 months ago

The 5th year wide receiver will look to reclaim his career in Minnesota.

Rondale Moore has signed with the Minnesota Vikings. After a knee injury took away his 2024 season, Moore will look to recover both from an injury and career standpoint.

Moore was looking to rewrite the script to his career last year after he was traded from the Arizona Cardinals to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for quarterback Desmond Ridder. Some bullish elements to his game include the ability to show explosion close to the line of scrimmage and being versatile in usage via carries and targets. The problem for Rondale Moore is that his skillset has been more theory than practice.

Deebo Samuel and Jayden Reed get lauded for their swiss army knife utilization and weaponry afforded to their respective teams. Another problem is that for every Deebo Samuel, there is a Rondale Moore who doesn’t hit for fantasy football. Rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III is someone to monitor as to whether or not he will follow the Samuel or Moore path. In the meantime, expect Rondale Moore to fit a gadget role for depth on what is becoming a deeper offense soon to be led by quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

JJ McCarthy Poised to Start for Vikings in 2025
3 months ago

The Minnesota Vikings have rejected trade offers for JJ McCarthy, and are moving forward with McCarthy as the projected starter for 2025.

Withdrawing from the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes, the Minnesota Vikings are now focused on developing their 2nd year quarterback JJ McCarthy.

McCarthy missed all of the 2024 season due to a preseason knee injury. In his stead, veteran quarterback Sam Darnold posted a Pro Bowl season with career highs in passing touchdowns and passing yards.  McCarthy, coming off a 2023 National championship with the University of Michigan Wolverines, still has much to prove as an NFL-caliber player.

McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, is best compared to Alex Smith on PlayerProfiler.com.  Minnesota has weapons with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, TJ Hockenson, and Aaron Jones which can unlock QB1 level production for McCarthy if everything plays out perfectly.
