Starts & Sits | Week 8 in Fantasy Football (2026)

by Matty Kiwoom · DFS

Halfway through the season, bye weeks and injuries are starting to wreck lineups left and right. Now is the perfect time to lean on underlying metrics, matchup data, and spike week candidates rather than name value alone. In this Starts & Sits Week 8 edition, we have a legend who needs a bounce-back, a committee back who’s about to get squeezed out, and a Cowboys wideout nobody drafted who’s quietly been a must-start recently.

Let’s get into the calls.

Starts & Sits | Week 8

Quarterback

START Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield only needed 11 pass attempts to score 8.7 fantasy points last week. That kind of efficiency on such a limited sample tells you the talent and rhythm are both still there even in a shortened outing. Tampa Bay simply isn’t going to ask him to throw the ball just 11 times again. I expect a much heavier workload this week as the offense gets back to its normal rhythm.

Atlanta is a friendly matchup for fantasy quarterbacks, which is exactly the kind of plus situation you want paired with a return to normal volume. Between the expected uptick in attempts and a defense that’s been generous to the position, Mayfield is in a great spot to deliver a QB1-caliber week.

SIT Bo Nix, Broncos

Bo Nix put up a monster fantasy day last week, but a lot of that was propped up by a 62-yard touchdown scamper. That is the kind of explosive, low-probability play that’s fun to watch but dangerous to bake into your weekly expectations. This week offers none of the same shortcuts.

Kansas City has been a bottom-five matchup for fantasy quarterbacks all season, and Denver’s receiver room is genuinely banged up heading into this one. Nix’s underlying volatility score sits north of 0.6, which is already on the higher end for the position. Pairing that unpredictability with a tough matchup and thin pass-catching options is a bad combination. I’d rather bank the Week 7 highlight reel as a nice memory and find a safer start this week.

Running Back

START Derrick Henry, Ravens

Derrick Henry has rarely lived on the start/sit fence in his career, but back-to-back duds have some fantasy managers second-guessing him heading into Week 8. Don’t be one of them. Buffalo presents one of the easiest matchups for opposing running backs in all of fantasy football this season, allowing the third-most fantasy points to the position. Lamar Jackson also is expected to be back under center, which should restore the full rhythm of Baltimore’s offense. He should also open up more room for King Henry to operate.

This game is projected to be a genuine shootout, with Baltimore’s implied total sitting at 25 points, and that kind of scoring environment usually means more goal-line work for a bruiser like Henry. Even after two quiet weeks, the matchup, the quarterback return, and the scoring environment all point toward a rebound performance.

SIT Emanuel Wilson, Seahawks

Emanuel Wilson has been genuinely productive as Seattle’s lead back this season. However, Week 8 stacks a lot of obstacles in his path. Zach Charbonnet is expected to make his season debut, and a crowded backfield is never good news for weekly fantasy reliability, even for a back who’s earned Wilson’s touches.

On top of the timeshare concern, Chicago presents a tough Monday Night matchup for opposing rushers, ranking among the stingiest defenses in the league against the position. Wilson’s season-long volatility score is already elevated, meaning his week-to-week floor isn’t particularly safe even in a clean workload, and a crowded backfield only compounds that risk. I’d rather bench Wilson this week and see how the touches shake out before trusting him again.

Wide Receiver

START Ryan Flournoy, Cowboys

It’s not often I’ll tell you to start a team’s third receiver, but Ryan Flournoy has earned it because he’s scored double-digit fantasy points in three straight games now. That kind of consistency doesn’t happen by accident. This week’s matchup against Arizona projects to be an absolute bonanza for fantasy purposes. Dallas is carrying the highest implied team total on the entire Week 8 slate at 30.5 points. Arizona also grades out as a plus matchup for opposing wide receivers, which only adds to the appeal.

Ryan Flournoy’s Advanced Metrics

When an offense is projected to score at that level, the volume tends to trickle all the way down the depth chart, and Flournoy has shown he can capitalize on exactly that kind of opportunity. Ride the hot hand here. The role and the matchup both justify it.

SIT Courtland Sutton & Jaylen Waddle, Broncos

Courtland Sutton is a shell of himself right now, and Jaylen Waddle is either hurt, ineffective, or both. Neither is a receiver I want to trust against Kansas City. As I mentioned when breaking down the Bo Nix situation above, Kansas City has been a bottom-five matchup for the position this season, which drags both of these pass catchers down even further. Add in the fact that divisional matchups tend to be lower scoring than their raw numbers might suggest, and you’ve got a recipe for a quiet day through the air.

Sutton’s season-long numbers have cratered compared to his usual production, and Waddle hasn’t looked good since arriving in Denver. Fantasy managers simply cannot start either of these wideouts with confidence this week.

Tight End

START Dallas Goedert, Eagles

The vibes around Philadelphia’s skill-position players are rough between injuries and disappointing fantasy production. It doesn’t feel great plugging any Eagle into your lineup at the moment. Dallas Goedert may be the exception. He’s remained productive even with Tanner McKee at quarterback, which says a lot about his standing in this offense regardless of who’s throwing him the ball.

Dallas Goedert’s 2026 Efficiency Metrics

This week’s Sunday Night Football matchup against Washington grades out as one of the softer matchups for tight ends in the league, ranking inside the two friendliest matchups at the position. Goedert’s fantasy points per route (0.49) this season sits comfortably ahead of most streaming options at the position, reinforcing that the efficiency is real and not just name value. Trust Goedert here even as you fade the rest of this offense.

SIT Jake Ferguson, Cowboys

It’s simple: Jake Ferguson has been bad for fantasy managers all season. Most fantasy managers should have no problem benching him most weeks. This week is trickier because the matchup against Arizona looks genuinely juicy on paper. That’s exactly the trap I want you to resist. The targets in this offense are all going to Dallas’s wide receivers on a weekly basis, and that hasn’t changed no matter how favorable the matchup looks for tight ends as a position.

A great matchup doesn’t mean anything if the role isn’t there to take advantage of it. Ferguson simply hasn’t earned the target share to make this a worthwhile start. Stream someone else this week.

Final Thoughts on Starts & Sits for Week 8

The theme for Week 8 is trusting what the tape and the numbers actually show over what the matchup chart alone suggests. Mayfield, Henry, Flournoy, and Goedert all have real, trackable reasons to believe in a strong week regardless of name value or recent box scores.  Meanwhile, Nix, Wilson, the Broncos receivers, and Ferguson are all cautionary tales about chasing a matchup or a highlight-reel memory instead of the underlying role. Build around volume and recent production, and you’ll come out ahead more often than not.
