Sportsbook Rankings vs. ECR Wars | Week 8

by Elliott Troop · Betting & Props

Week 8 got underway with Bryce Young turning into a pumpkin, slamming the brakes on what looked like an early-season breakout. We have a great slate of games in Week 8. We’ve got Lamar Jackson vs. Josh Allen, the high-powered Lions offense against the punishing Vikings defense, a potential NFC Championship preview in the Bears vs. Seahawks, and, of course, a Geno Smith revenge game.

We have the Houston Texans, New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, and San Francisco 49ers on bye. Injuries are piling up. You’re most likely going to have to start someone you don’t feel great about. Hopefully this column can give you some insights.

For those of you who are new here, every week, we compare sportsbook rankings with expert consensus rankings to try and find an edge. The scoring system is simple: closest to the final rank wins. Last week, I highlighted these players before Sunday’s games:

C.J. Stroud – Experts win

Ollie Gordon – Experts win

DeVonta Smith – Push

Kenyon Sadiq – Experts win

After an ass-whooping in Week 6, the experts bounced back with a whooping of their own. They win 3-0-1 on the week to go ahead for the season.

Sportsbook Rankings vs Expert Consensus Rankings

Kyler Murray | QB, Minnesota Vikings

Sportsbook rank: QB8

Expert rank: QB12

Kevin O’Connell’s reputation as the premier quarterback whisperer has taken a bigger hit than Tom Cruise’s status as a bankable box-office star post-Digger. I’m sorry, Tom, I loved it but only 12 people saw it. Heading into the season, there was some misplaced buzz around the acquisition of Kyler Murray on a veteran minimum contract. Logic dictated that Murray, who had only supported one top-24 wide receiver season in his career, would be rehabilitated by O’ Connell.

That hasn’t been the case so far. The 6-0 Vikings have had next to no contribution from their offense. Murray has been the guy who contributes nothing on a school project that gets an A+.

Among 34 quarterbacks with at least 100 dropbacks, Murray ranks:

  • 27th in EPA/play
  • 28th in success rate
  • 24th in EPA/pass
  • 29th in passing yards per game
  • 32nd in passing TDs

The Vikings offense as a whole ranks:

  • 29th in total yards per game
  • 29th in passing yards per game
  • 29th in EPA/play
  • 31st in success rate

Week 8 sees the meeting of the truly stoppable force of the Vikings offense and the very moveable object of the Lions defense. The Lions have hitherto been the NFL’s slump buster, the manna from heaven for sputtering NFL offenses.

The Lions allows the most total yards per game (391), and the passing yards per game (291.8). They also rank second in both EPA per play allowed and passing touchdowns allowed. The books think that Murray can get right against Detroit’s All-You-Can-Eat defense, while the experts are expressing a little more apprehension around his upside even in a plus matchup.

Kyren Williams | RB, Los Angeles Rams

Sportsbook rank: RB10

Expert rank: RB4

The fantasy football community has a curious relationship with Kyren Williams.

Since his rookie season, Williams has finished as the RB7, RB7, RB9 and currently ranks as the RB6. Despite Williams being consistency personified, the fantasy football community has continually wishcast others into his role.

Well, the last three weeks have provided some vindication for the Blake Corum believers. In that time, Williams has 42 attempts compared to Corum’s 31, 198 rushing yards compared to Corum’s 154 and two touchdowns to Corum’s two. However, Corum’s role has been incredibly game flow dependent. He averages a 24% snap share when the Rams play from behind compared to a 45% share in the games they play with a lead.

The Rams get the abhorrent Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8. There aren’t enough words available to delineate the Chargers’ abysmal campaign. The Rams are 6.5-point favorites, which helps explain the sportsbooks’ ranking of Williams. The books think that the Rams will be leading for the majority of the game. In games where the Rams are leading, Williams sees less work — which translates into a lower ranking.

Tre Tucker | WR, Las Vegas Raiders

Sportsbook rank: WR30

Expert rank: WR23

The Kirk Cousins-aissance has been one of the stories of the season. While his offensive efforts haven’t been able to paper over one of the leakiest defenses in the league, he has run a better-than-average offense. And that’s with one of the weakest wide receiver rooms in the NFL. Cousins ranks sixth in passing yards per game (268) and leads the league in passing touchdowns.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of Cousins’ play has been Tre Tucker. Drafted in the 15th round of fantasy drafts — if at all — Tucker currently ranks as the WR21 in points per game. He has three games in which he has scored 20 fantasy points or more, he has 200 receiving yards in the last two weeks and he has three touchdowns.

Tre Tucker’s Advanced Metrics

The Raiders have given up over 30 points in each of their last four games. Their leaky defense creates game scripts in which Cousins has to air it out. While New York’s offense has been up and down, they should be able to move the ball against the Raiders. If that’s the case, Tucker should see a lot of targets. From the sportsbook perspective, the Jets are giving up the fifth-fewest passing yards per game.

Chig Okonkwo | TE, Washington Commanders

Sportsbook rank: TE17

Expert rank: TE12

One of the biggest narratives during the hazy days of the off-season was the potential breakout of Chig Okonkwo. The veteran tight end signed with the Commanders and looked certain to be a key part of their offense. Then, the Commanders signed Stefon Diggs, and we had to slide the Okonkwo breakout narrative under the rug with the pro-Marvin Harrison Jr and Brian Thomas Jr takes. I know it wasn’t just me.

Well, it’s time to dust off the Okonkwo propaganda. Franchise legend Terry McLaurin was ruled out for the season after sustaining a brutal knee injury. In the last two weeks, Okonkwo has 13 targets, 11 receptions and 129 yards. In fantasy, injuries open up opportunities. The experts deem Okonkwo the big winner from the McLaurin injury.

The Commanders face an Eagles defense that has flattered to deceive. Despite some mediocre performances, the Eagles have allowed just 41 yards per game to tight ends through seven weeks. That’s a difficult matchup, and it gives the sportsbooks a reason to be cautious. They have Okonkwo at TE17, five spots below the experts.
