The Houston Texans made several cuts that will have fantasy implications for the 2024 NFL Season.
Starting with the running back room, the Texans chose to cut Jawhar Jordan and keep Cam Akers on the team. Akers shined in the preseason and Dameon Pierce struggled, so there’s ambiguity behind Mixon on who will be the RB2. This uncertainty makes Akers worth rostering in deeper leagues.
The Texans wide receiver room had some significant cuts in the form of Noah Brown and Ben Skowronek. This leaves John Metchie along with Xavier Hutchinson as the two receivers who will complete for playing time behind Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, and Tank Dell. Those big 3 make Metchie and Hutchinson players who shouldn’t be considered fantasy relevant outside of injuries taking place.
The tight end room also had an interesting move with Teagan Quitoriano being cut, which gives Cade Stover an easier route to seeing the field in 2024. While Stover will be behind Dalton Schultz and battling Brevin Jordan for playing time to start the season, he has history with C.J. Stroud from Ohio State and is a must-roster in dynasty leagues.

Eighth-Year wide receiver Noah Brown is resigning with Houston Texans after his breakout season.
Noah Brown was drafted out of Ohio State in the seventh round by the Dallas Cowboys. Brown rarely saw the field until his sixth season with Dallas where he recorded career best with 43 catches with 555 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. Brown left Dallas for Houston on 1-year deal last season. Brown stepped up for rookie CJ Stroud when injuries started destimating the team. In only 10 games last season, Brown had 33 catches for a now career high 567 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. Brown has agreed to another 1 year deal to stay in Houston.
CJ Stroud’s phenominal season saw some explosive plays from his wide outs. The top three receivers for Houston stepped up big when one went down. Rookie receiver Tank Dell was having a great connection with Stroud to start the season. When Dell went down with a season ending injury, both Nico Collins and Noah Brown stepped in and the offense did not miss a beat. Brown had a two game stretch with over 300 yards recieving. Look for Stroud to continue to flourish with all four of his top targets returning for his second season.
Noah Brown was never really a fantasy option until the last 2 years. Brown will be looked at as the fourth weapon behind the aformentioned Collins and Dell, as well as recently resigned tight end Dalton Schultz. However Brown has shown he can produce should any one of them goes down. Brown is a deep stash in the deepest leagues or a wavier wire pick up.
Texans Wide Receiver Noah Brown is set to miss at least the next four games on Injured Reserve.
Rookie C.J. Stroud seems to have found his favorite targets in Nico Collins and Robert Woods, who combined for 21 targets in week one. That said, we have a bit more clarity now on who will arise as the WR3 for the Texans. With Brown set to miss at least the next 4 games, you can expect Tank Dell and John Metchie to battle it out for Brown’s role, which led him to play 68% of snaps in week one.
Metchie is working his way back from missing last year battling Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, and missing week 1 of 2023 with a hamstring injury. Metchie returned to practice this week and there’s hope he’ll be playing his first NFL game this weekend.
Rookie Tank Dell played his first NFL game last week and was relatively quiet with 3 catches for 34 yards while playing just under 50% of the snaps. That number is expected to increase with this latest news on Noah Brown. While there is plenty of reason to be hopeful for the long-term outlook of both Metchie and Dell, you can expect them to both have a fairly even split working as the WR3 if they’re both active this Sunday. It’s not quite time to put either in your lineup yet.
