Brandin Cooks Traded to the New England Patriots: Fantasy Football Winners & Losers

by Andrew Persanyi, March 18, 2017

As the dust settles following the Brandin Cooks trade, many other receivers on both New England and New Orleans are affected in a fantasy context. In addition to Cooks, players like Willie Snead, Malcolm Mitchell and Julian Edelman will see drastic changes in fantasy production next season.

I’m afraid this trade marks the end of Julian Edelman’s fantasy glory. In his age-30 season, Edelman was painfully inefficient with a Production Premium, Target Premium and fantasy points per target all ranking outside the top-80 among NFL wide receivers.

by Kevin McHugh, March 18, 2017

Deshaun Watson was a big-time college quarterback who could become a fantasy football asset based on his advanced stats & metrics profile.

While Deshaun Watson has been impressive in his preparation for the draft, he struggled with accuracy and consistency at times at Clemson, and his his 49 mph (1st-percentile) Throw Velocity suggests he will struggle to fit the ball into tight windows.

Samaje Perine: Putting the Power in Power Back

by Zach Krueger, March 18, 2017

Samaje Perine is a perennial power back who uses his 5-foot-10, 235-pound frame to smash his way through opposing defenses and into the secondary. He’s another three-year back who chose to leave school following his junior year, after posting solid numbers every season playing in the Big 12.

While Perine does lack lateral quickness, his ability to burst through holes and run over defenders makes him an ideal complementary back for a team with an established dual-threat running back.

Despite his underwhelming NFL Scouting Combine performance, Florida State running back Dalvin Cook can overcome his combine flop and turn it to NFL success.

There are less than 50 days until the NFL Draft. Now that the Combine has come to a close, it’s time to get serious about how we view the incoming prospects, taking a look at game film as well as fresh Combine metrics.

John Ross is lightning quick and he made good on that speed at the NFL Scouting Combine, breaking Chris Johnson’s 40-yard dash time record with a blazing 4.22. PlayerProfiler’s Best Comparable for Ross is Mike Wallace, and it’s easy to see why.

Everybody knows the Pro Bowl players from Julio Jones to Le’Veon Bell. In fact, Bell’s 17.8 Value Over Stream (VOS) in 2016 was the highest ever recorded by PlayerProfiler.

Le’Veon Bell is great, but what about the other guys, the quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight with a VOS hovering around 0.0? Which players represent the fantasy football stream? Who were the ultimate replacement-level players at their respective position in 2016?

Best Running Back Yards vs. Light Defensive Fronts in 2016

by Kevin McHugh, March 14, 2017

We love backs who take advantage of their opportunity, so we’ve decided to look at running backs with the highest yards per carry against light defensive fronts, or formations with six or less defensive linemen and/or linebackers in the tackle box.

Ty Montgomery finished as the 12th, 10th, and 2nd scoring running back in weeks where he received at least 19 opportunities in 2016 (including both carries and targets).

A Fantasy Football War Over Zero RB Strategy Is Coming

by Nathan Aucker, March 13, 2017

The #NeverZeroRB crowd stands defiant like the fabled black knight. Overconfident despite losing limbs left and right. What are you gonna do, bleed on me?

In reality, the waiver players that matter are those that impact our fantasy lineups, and weekly scores. To that end, waiver running backs were more than two times more likely than wide receivers to provide a positive VORP.

by Kevin McHugh, March 10, 2017

We examine the running backs with the highest Yards Per Carry Against Stacked Defensive Fronts, or formations with at least eight defensive linemen and/or linebackers in the tackle box.

Tyrod Taylor’s mobility opened up running lanes for both Mike Gillislee and LeSean McCoy. Gillislee would be an interesting pickup in 2017 should McCoy go down.
