Long secret meetings between Sean McVay and rookie quarterback Simpson confirm the head coach was fully invested in drafting him 13th overall as the future of the franchise. The Rams intentionally kept their interest quiet, even instructing Simpson to hide their pre-draft interactions to ensure they could secure him as Matthew Stafford’s successor.

If he ever wants to leave coaching, McVay will have a successful career in acting. Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Simpson is viewed as the heir apparent and expected to spend his first two NFL seasons developing on the bench while Stafford remains the starter.

The Los Angeles Rams just made a move to prepare for the future at No. 13 by securing Ty Simpson, a former five-star pedigree weapon who possesses the elite processing and 64.5-percent Completion Percentage needed to orchestrate Sean McVay’s offensive symphony. While his 22.7 Breakout Age (9th-percentile) looks sluggish on paper, it was a pure situational delay behind Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe, and his historic 0.9% Interception Rate proves he is the high-floor, surgical distributor this system craves.

In dynasty formats, Simpson is a player you may have to wait on, but has a massive ceiling, as his 76.0 College QBR and underrated mobility make him a future Superflex cornerstone in one of the most QB-friendly systems in the NFL.

While Jacoby Brissett’s prolific 2025 season and proven ball distribution skills would provide a more stable 2026 floor for Trey McBride, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson, a developmental rookie could lead to inconsistent targets and lower immediate efficiency. The Cardinals’ have expressed interest in Alabama’s Ty Simpson, though veteran bridge options like Brissett and Gardner Minshew make more sense for a rebuilding roster.

Brissett under center is best case scenario for fantasy football. However, if Simpson goes to Arizona, dynasty leaguers could be presented with a strategic “buy-low” opportunity on McBride/Wilson/Harrison if their market value dips due to rookie-year growing pains. Their long-term value remains insulated regardless of the short-term quarterback volatility.

Pelissero notes that Simpson hopes to solidify his status as a first-round pick with his combine performance. Simpson is commonly viewed as the QB2 in this year’s draft behind the routinely mocked first overall pick, Fernando Mendoza. With Mendoza opting not to throw and Simpson throwing at the combine, Simpson hopes to make up some ground.

With several teams desperate for a quarterback upgrade, a great combine showing from Simpson should vault him up the draft board. He is routinely mocked in the back half of the first round. A strong combine could make him a top 15 pick. With that type of draft capital, he would also skyrocket up the Board in dynasty rookie drafts.

Many around college football expected Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson to either transfer to another competitive school for his senior year or finish at ‘Bama to build on his breakout redshirt junior campaign. Not so fast. After leading the Crimson Tide to the College Football Playoff, polled NFL general managers agreed that the 23-year-old had solidified a first-round draft grade after just one full season as a starter.

“Nobody said second round,” Ty’s dad, Jason Simpson (head coach, UT-Martin), said of every NFL general manager they contacted. The quarterback had already fielded transfer offers from schools including Oregon, Miami, and Tennessee. In the end, the draw of striking while the iron is hot was the decision-maker. Several analysts, including ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr., already had Simpson penciled in as the third-best prospect at the position, just behind Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza (Indiana) and Oregon’s Dante Moore. While those two have not yet declared for the draft, they are expected to do so in the coming days.

Simpson established a strong presence in his only season as the starter. He completed a cool 64.5% of his throws, racking up 3,567 yards with 28 touchdowns against just five picks. He took over under center when Jalen Milroe (SEA) was drafted in the third round of last year’s draft. Clearly ready to take the reins, Simpson led Alabama to an 11-4 record and a berth in the CFP. Unfortunately for the Tide, the run ended there when the quarterback suffered a fractured rib in the early going against No. 1 Indiana.

With a collection of first-round grades levied on him, Simpson will turn his attention to the combine and attempt to raise his stock further still.
