Two weeks of data is still a small sample, but it’s enough to start separating real trends from Week 1 flukes. Some early-season breakouts are proving themselves to be legit, a few preseason favorites are already searching for answers, and a few defenses are showing exactly who they are. Let’s dig into the matchups and the underlying numbers to sort out who deserves a spot in your Week 3 lineup.

Week 3 Starts & Sits
Quarterback
START Tyler Shough, Saints
On paper, Tyler Shough draws a tough one against the Raiders this week. But look past the box scores because Las Vegas has feasted on the train-wreck Chargers offense and the league’s worst team in Miami, which isn’t exactly a Murderers’ Row of competition. The matchup isn’t as scary as it seems.

Tyler Shough’s Explosive Rating
Shough leads the NFL in passing yards, ranks second in Money Throws, leads the league in expected fantasy points per game, and has the fourth-highest deep-ball completion rate. That doesn’t look like a one-week mirage; that’s a quarterback playing at a QB1 level, and he’s still comfortably in the top-12 range for Week 3.
SIT Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers
Baker Mayfield sits outside the top 20 at the position this week, and it’s not hard to see why. Minnesota’s defense is a nightmare matchup for quarterbacks right now, and their blitz rate is legitimately frightening for a Tampa Bay offense that hasn’t looked like itself so far this season.
Mayfield is coming off a loss to Cleveland, and the tape from that game did little to inspire confidence. With plenty of better streaming options available this week, there’s no reason to force Mayfield into your lineup against a defense built to make life miserable for signal-callers.
Running Back
START Quinshon Judkins, Browns
The start to the season hasn’t been pretty for Quinshon Judkins, but don’t let that scare you off him in Week 3. He’s still in the RB2 range this week, with a matchup that’s about as friendly as it gets. Carolina has been a cupcake for opposing running backs so far this year.

Quinshon Judkins’ Advanced Metrics
The volume is there, too. Judkins owns the 11th-best opportunity share in the league at 77.5%, and he added five catches in Week 2 alone. His expected fantasy points are running nearly four points higher than what he’s actually producing, which tells you the role is legit even if the box score hasn’t caught up yet. This is a buy-low, bounce-back spot if I’ve ever seen one.
SIT Rhamondre Stevenson & TreVeyon Henderson, Patriots
The usage out of the New England backfield was a nightmare in Week 2. Neither back made a real dent, despite TreVeyon Henderson breaking off a long touchdown. A long run can paper over a rough day, but it doesn’t change the underlying picture of a muddled committee.
Jacksonville isn’t the matchup to fix that either because this is not an advantageous spot for running backs. Both New England backs are talented enough to have a good week, sure, but neither has cracked the top 25 at the position, and I’m not banking on this matchup being the one that changes that.
Wide Receiver
START Malik Nabers, Giants
Malik Nabers lost his starting quarterback, and I get why that makes some fantasy managers want to walk away. But Jameis Winston has never been shy about letting it fly. This week, Nabers gets the Titans, who have been one of the most generous matchups for wide receivers so far this season. That’s a combination that should keep the targets flowing.
Nabers has a real shot at double-digit targets in this one, and with a matchup this favorable, now is not the time to worry about a quarterback change. Trust the target share and trust the talent.
SIT Chris Godwin, Buccaneers
Chris Godwin finds himself outside the WR2 range this week, and his role is a big reason why. He’s currently being out-targeted by rookie Ted Hurst. That’s never a great sign heading into a tough matchup. Vegas isn’t projecting a high-scoring affair here, either, which limits the overall pie for everyone involved.

Chris Godwin’s 2026 Opportunities
Minnesota has locked down just about every receiver not named Christian Watson this season, and Godwin simply doesn’t have the same vertical burst that let Watson win against this defense. Bench him this week.
Tight End
START George Kittle, 49ers
George Kittle is riding a TE1 ranking into Week 3 after finishing as a top-seven tight end in Week 2, and the matchup only makes things easier. Arizona hasn’t been a difficult foe for opposing tight ends, and this game projects to have plenty of points from both sides.

Two weeks into the season, Kittle’s underlying metrics look outstanding across the board. Between the role, the matchup, and the scoring environment, he’s one of the safer plays at the position in all of fantasy this week.
SIT Mark Andrews, Ravens
This game has all the makings of a shootout, but that hasn’t been enough to get Mark Andrews going so far this season. The role simply hasn’t been there, and he has yet to clear a 70% snap share in either game. The yards after catch haven’t shown up either, and with Zay Flowers projected to be back in the lineup, Andrews’ target competition is only getting tougher.
Until the usage changes, I’d rather chase the matchup upside somewhere else at the position.
Final Thoughts
Three weeks into the season, the gap between box score and underlying performance is starting to matter more than ever. That’s exactly where guys like Shough, Judkins, and Kittle separate themselves from the pack. Lean on role, target share, and matchup rather than last week’s fantasy points, and you’ll come out ahead more often than not. That’s the approach behind every call above.
