The Steelers Tight Ends Are Tumbling on Underdog
4 months ago

Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth are seeing their draft stock plummet in the aftermath of the Steelers acquiring Smith in a trade.

It isn’t very often that a trade to acquire the TE4 from the previous season nukes the value of 2 players at the same position. This is just the case with Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Since being traded from the Dolphins to reunite with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith have seen their collective ADP drop significantly. In the last week on Underdog, Freiermuth has fallen 34.3 spots from the early 14th round to the early 17th round. Smith has dropped 27.4 spots from the latter part of the 10th round into the latter part of the 12th round.

Aaron Rodgers traditionally hasn’t had elite tight ends at his disposal. Going back to Jermichael Finley, the most productive players in a Rodgers led offense favor the wide receivers. With 2 excellent talents in Smith and Freiermuth, it doesn’t look promising that both can have scorching individual numbers. Collectively, they may thrive, but fantasy gamers are wise to let their price plummet and find tight end options elsewhere. DK Metcalf in round 4 is a price worth paying in comparison to the ambiguous tight end room that the Steelers currently have.

Jonnu Smith Traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers
4 months ago

After weeks of trade speculation, Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith is now heading to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After trade rumors sparked a few weeks ago, the Dolphins and Steelers are in agreement for a trade involving tight end Jonnu Smith. The Steelers get Smith who will reunite with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and the Dolphins will get a late-round pick swap in exchange.

The nexus to the trade stems from Smith’s desire for a new contract from the Dolphins. This move is a signal that the Dolphins may be trying to shed salary in an effort to get in front of a team rebuild. This should stir up Tyreek Hill trade rumors again.

Jonnu Smith was the TE4 in 2024 with 111 targets, 88 receptions, and 884 receiving yards. The fantasy fallout is impactful. Smith and Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth stand to siphon off target share from each other making them less appealing to draft in fantasy. For the Dolphins, it consolidates a freed up 111 targets to a more concise pie that figures to be eaten by running back De’Von Achane and wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

A move for a tight end may be in the works as the Dolphins now have a void. In the meantime, expect plenty of buzz to swarm back to a Tyreek Hill trade as the trade of Smith may signal to the rest of the league that the Dolphins are surefire sellers.

Jonnu Smith is Falling on Underdog

With trade rumors swirling, Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith is falling on Underdog.

Rumors are rapidly spreading about Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith being traded. In particular, a reunion with old head coach Arthur Smith is possibly in the works. Arthur Smith was the Atlanta Falcons head coach in 2023 and is now the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

These rumors have caused Jonnu Smith to fall on Underdog 5.3 spots in the last week into the middle of round 9. The hesitation for drafters to click on Jonnu is in large part due to the fact that he had a not so nice 69 total targets in 2023. Drafters prefer the TE4 finish Jonnu had on 111 targets in 2024 and see splitting time with Pat Freiermuth in Pittsburgh as a negative.

A trade to the Steelers would plummet Smith’s ADP and dynasty stock, but it is wise to consider that he also wants a new contract from the Dolphins. These trade rumors may just be one element of negotiations along the way to a new contract. Should Smith get traded, expect Jaylen Waddle’s price point to rise in all formats.

Jonnu Smith Draws Arthur Smith's Eye in Potential Trade to Pittsburgh
5 months ago

Jonnu Smith kicked off a small swirl of trade rumors after asking the Dolphins for a well-deserved upgraded contract

Jonnu Smith broke the Miami Dolphins franchise record for Tight Ends in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns last year. Meanwhile the veteran TE is set to only earn $4.8 million this season, that’s less than the 49ers blocking TE Luke Farrell, Panthers’ Tommy Tremble or the Viking’ Josh Oliver. Jonnu put the entire offense on his back last season and for how explosive and dynamic he was, a pay bump should be more than worth it.

These trade rumors are only that, rumors. They do make some sense though. Pittsburgh may have failed a few critical dice rolls in a row with offboarding both their starting quarterbacks and trading away George Pickens, so the case for adding a weapon is strong. Also we collectively owe Arthur Smith an apology for all the outrage of starting Jonnu Smith over Kyle Pitts in Atlanta – turns out dude knows ball. Probably what’s best for Jonnu is just to stay put and go for a repeat season, and if the Miami offense bounces back he could even push for TE1.

Dolphins Agree to Terms with Jonnu Smith

The Miami Dolphins have reached an agreement with tight end Jonnu Smith.

Jonnu Smith is taking his talents down to South Beach. Smith agreed on a two-year deal with the Miami Dolphins worth $10 million. Smith’s arrival fills a huge void that the Dolphins have at tight end.

The talented former Falcons tight end looks to continue where he left off in 2023. While splitting snaps with Kyle Pitts last season, Smith was surprisingly a force to be reckoned with. The veteran posted career highs of 50 receptions for 582 yards on 70 targets, while bringing in three touchdowns.

Under Mike McDaniels, the tight end has been a forgotten position. With Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle garnering most of the targets and receptions, one can see why that is the case. Smith’s athleticism and size could make the tight end be in position for a huge year, especially in the Red Zone. There is not much competition standing Smith’s way, which makes him an excellent sleeper for this upcoming season. Whether you are in a dynasty or season long leagues, Smith is a name to remember when thinking of waiting to draft a tight end late in your fantasy drafts.

Jonnu Smith Released by Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are moving forward without Jonnu Smith at the Tight End position, clearing the runway for Kyle Pitts.

Jonnu Smith is being released by the Atlanta Falcons. The veteran Tight End caught 50 passes for 532 yards and 3 touchdowns last season. If the Atlanta Falcons are going to get the most out of their 2021 4th overall pick in the NFL Draft in Kyle Pitts, they will need to have Kyle Pitts on the football field as much as possible.

While detractors took coach speak regarding Kyle Pitts run blocking ability as a sign of further misuse, savvy fantasy gamers know that the true path to relevance as a Tight End involves being on the field as much as possible. Allowing Kyle Pitts to be on the field regardless of down and distance will further keep defenses off balance.

With early career struggles, it is easy to forget that Kyle Pitts ran a 4.49 in the 40 yard dash and has a 99% Speed Score. Buy Kyle Pitts in Dynasty where you can, but also look over at UnderDog BestBall drafts where Pitts has an ADP of 92 in the middle of the 7th round.
