Who is Jared Goff

Jared Goff’s production sold the Los Angeles Rams to trade with the Tennessee Titans to acquire the number one overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to select him. Despite the high cost, then head coach Jeff Fisher sat him for the majority of his rookie season. Goff started seven games, but did not throw for above 235 yards in any game. After that season, the Rams made a coaching change and hired a young Sean McVay, who helped elevate Goff's game. In the four seasons Goff started under McVay’s watch, he averaged 4,270.5 yards, 7.7 yards per attempt, and 25.5 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. The Rams made a Super Bowl appearance under Goff’s watch, but failed to score a touchdown and soon thereafter began to get exposed as more so a product of McVay’s system than an elite ascending quarterback. After losing in the divisional round of the 2020 playoffs, the Rams agreed to a trade with the Detroit Lions to send Jared Goff, a 2022 and 2023 first-round pick and a 2021 third-round pick for Matthew Stafford.

Unfortunately for the Lions and Jared Goff, he resembled the rookie quarterback with Jeff Fisher more so than the two-time pro-bowler under McVay’s tutelage. Goff’s 39.0 QBR finished 24th among quarterbacks, His 3,158 air yards ranked 25th at the position. His 6.6 yards per attempt and 40 deep ball attempts were 27th. That culminated in Goff finishing the 2021 season completing 67.2-percent of his passes for 3,245 yards and 19 touchdowns to 8 interceptions over 14 games. Goff is under contract for three more seasons, but the Lions have an out from that deal in 2023. Without an heir apparent on the roster, it is likely Goff stays under center for the Lions next season, but it remains to be seen how long that will last, especially if the Lions draft a quarterback in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft.
