Just as important as sizing up our own team is reviewing the other rosters in your league. We all like to think, “I got a shot this year,” and maybe you do. However, if you’re in a league with a clear juggernaut, it serves you well to be realistic.
Everyone knows who the blue-chip players are. If you find yourself looking upwards in your league’s rankings at multiple contenders with handfuls of those guys, you’re almost certainly a “pretender.” The flipside is just as apparent. Rostering a receiving corps with guys like Ja’Marr Chase, CeeDee Lamb, and Malik Nabers means you’re likely a “contender” right off the bat.
A little tougher to suss out are those teams in the middle. Maybe you have Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and a back like Omarion Hampton. Those are some nice pieces for sure, but if a team in your league has the first wide receiver group I mentioned, you’re still facing an uphill climb. The time to become an active seller may vary depending on the team, the player, and your league’s activity levels and trends. That said, having a realistic picture of your team and how it stacks up will help you negotiate those variables leading up to and through the season.
So, what’ll it be? What kind of team are you looking at?

The Contender
You’re coming fresh off a championship with all your studs in tow. Or, maybe you’re one piece away and looking to add the one piece to carry your team to glory. Whatever the specific circumstances for your team, you’re confident and “in it to win it.”
On the Waterfront. Godfather is right up there, though. But I’ve always had a soft spot for this one. pic.twitter.com/DLU65TVURD

Open Up the Pocketbook
2027 first-round picks are at a premium right now. Their value, as it stands right now, is more likely to decrease than to increase. This isn’t to say the class is over-hyped. On the contrary, it’s fairly accurately valued on the surface. As we’ve seen in years past, however, a lot can happen over the course of a season. Exploring their worth in your league is justifiable.
Be active in scouring your opponents’ rosters for suitable plays to upgrade to your roster. Look for matches with trade partners where your strengths could address their team’s weaknesses, and vice versa. Oftentimes, managers with talented older players like to wait until a few weeks into the season and take advantage of value spikes after big games. Having some foresight and being proactive could potentially net you these players at a discount.
I’m the Great Pretender
Obviously, if you know you fall into this category, you’re not exactly “pretending.” But it goes so well with “Contender” for title purposes, we’re sticking with it.

Your squad may have some good pieces, maybe even one or two great ones. But a closer look at your team compared to the other teams in your league has made it apparent you aren’t quite ready to make a serious run at the championship. Naturally, you don’t want to give up your few good foundational pieces, assuming they’re young enough to hold value through your building process. So some creativity might be needed to get deals done.

As with the contenders, being proactive and seeking suitable trade partners will only help your efforts. Look for opportunities to offload aging veterans. Sometimes it will serve you better to hold off until in-season. Once people see Christian McCaffrey is healthy and doing his thing, you might be able to squeeze a late first from a contender.
Other times, taking advantage of offseason hype could net you the highest price. For example, D.J. Moore being paired with Josh Allen in Buffalo has generated a decent amount of buzz for the veteran wideout. Taking advantage of that buzz now, before it becomes apparent he is not going to be a 10-target per game receiver in that offense. If you have a strong take like that on a player, don’t be afraid to make your bets and act accordingly.
Teams in this position should be putting a premium on rookie draft picks, even beyond the 2027 season. Remember, draft picks are assets that tend to hold their value, even increasing it as we get later in the season. Usually, rookie pick values are reaching their peak after the season, as we approach the NFL Draft.
Clowns to the Left, Jokers to the Right
Stuck in the middle is an area we want to avoid. I guess they could be called “the real pretenders.” These squads think they have a shot every year, and maybe they do. But their odds are just bad enough that they end up as a perennial playoff team struggling just to get out of the first or second round. Refusing to be real with themselves, they keep holding on, thinking their own rookie picks are going to get them over the hump.

Often, though, more drastic measures are called for.
I could understand being a fence-straddler for one year, but only in certain circumstances. Pick a lane and commit to it!
Don’t Sit On Your Hands
Dynasty fantasy football is a year-round game. Investing time while others take a break can give managers a massive edge over the competition. League compositions and managing styles can vary greatly, but it’s important to know in which general direction we are heading. Should I be building up or stripping down? The sooner we can answer this question, the sooner we can start working towards our goals for the year. Be it as a contender or as a rebuilding team.
