Baker Mayfield is applying leverage to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, setting a hard deadline to halt contract extensions once training camp begins in roughly a month. Head coach Todd Bowles believes Mayfield is the team’s franchise quarterback long-term following a 2025 campaign where Mayfield logged 3,693 passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns.
The former number one overall pick currently commands a 15.56-percent cap hit for the 2026 season, leaving both sides with significant ground to cover to find financial alignment. Mayfield’s Top-5 fantasy QB 2024 season proved to be a mirage in 2025, but Tampa will be forced to extend him based on position scarcity. With Mike Evans now in San Francisco, Chris Godwin assumes alpha status in Tampa Bay after a compromised campaign where he averaged 9.2 Fantasy Points Per Game following a severe 2024 ankle dislocation. No longer grinding the rehabilitation process, his trajectory points upward with a massive volume of vacated targets available in this passing game.
At a current WR40 price tag in best ball drafts, Godwin is a premier rebound candidate at a significant discount. At age 30.3. years of age, he has several years of high target share years left for bargain-shopping dynasty managers.
Baker Mayfield is drawing a line in the sand with the Buccaneers by saying, “Obviously, yes, I would love to have a long-term deal done, but they know my deadline: as soon as training camp starts, we’re not doing any contract stuff. It’s all ball.” This sets a firm contract deadline for the start of training camp.
The 31-year-old quarterback is coming off a season where he averaged 16.6 fantasy points per game while recording a 93.6 True Passer Rating. Mayfield is entering a pivotal contract year, he must command a new offense without Mike Evans. Regardless, contract discussions are positive, and Mayfield’s dynasty stock will immediately surge when he is ultimately extended by the Buccaneers.
Ted Hurst has dominated recent practices, using his 6-4 frame and 4.42 speed to push for the Buccaneers’ X-receiver spot. Although the team features a deep receiving corps, he is the only TB receiver with the physical profile to play the Mike Evans role. Hurst can secure a major role on offense if his strong play continues through training camp.
Hurst is a name for fantasy managers to watch heading into the season. A top rookie draft sleeper for dynasty leagues, Hurst could become best ball-viable as he competes with Jalen McMillan throughout Bucs camp and preseason
A left shoulder injury took Bakery Mayfield out of a Sunday Night Football matchup with the L.A. Rams. All week, Buccaneers fans and fantasy managers have held their collective breath in hopes of Mayfield starting vs. the Cardinals.
The Buccaneers are just ahead of the Panthers in the NFC South standings with a record of 6-5. From a fantasy football perspective, Mayfield starting helps Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin, and a returning Bucky Irving in a juicy matchup at home vs. the Cardinals. Baker Mayfield struggled before exiting Sunday’s game, completing just nine passes for 41 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He suffered a low-grade sprain to his non-throwing shoulder late in the first half and did not return.
His absence crippled the Buccaneers passing attack, dragging down rookie standout Emeka Egbuka, who finished with just three receptions for 32 yards.
The ground game wasn’t any better. After an RB1 breakout in Week 11, Sean Tucker managed just 42 rushing yards from scrimmage as the Buccaneers offense failed to find any rhythm.
Tampa Bay will attempt to rebound in Week 13 against the Arizona Cardinals. If Mayfield can’t suit up, veteran Teddy Bridgewater is expected to take over under center, a downgrade for the entire offense from a fantasy perspective.
