Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo says drafting a quarterback is a “priority right now,” but “all the options are still open for us.”
While many expect the New England Patriots to fill a massive hole at quarterback with the third overall pick in the NFL Draft, head coach Jerod Mayo told NFL Network that he’s not yet certain that the team will do so. The Patriots own their highest draft pick in over three decades, and this particular quarterback class is highly sought-after.
Although Mayo did confirm that adding a quarterback is a priority for the franchise, he maintained that “you really have to be in love with the guy” to spend a top-three pick on a signal-caller. He emphasized the need for players who are true team fits while also professing his faith in Jacoby Brissett, a former Patriot who has found success as a part-time starter and backup throughout his eight-year career.
Mayo referred to Brissett as “a great leader” and said, “He could absolutely be our starter this year.” The signing of Brissett was initially viewed as a sort of bridge quarterback concept or mentor for the incoming rookie, but Mayo’s words still hold value. Clearly, Brissett has the confidence of his coach if the team either goes a different direction or drafts a rookie who isn’t ready to go right away.
For fantasy purposes, Brissett provides a relatively stable yet low floor—both for his own production and that of his receivers. The ninth-year man has proved he can play, but he projects to be no higher than an extremely low-end QB2 provided he is given the starting job. If New England does decide to draft a quarterback third overall—likely Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels—fantasy owners can expect a shakier floor but a much higher ceiling. Both Maye and Daniels are uber-talented prospects, but a poor receiving corps doesn’t bode well for success right away. Players like Hunter Henry, Kendrick Bourne, K.J. Osborn, and Demario Douglas would also benefit from improved quarterback play.

The New England Patriots plan to sign veteran free-agent ...
The New England Patriots have agreed to terms with quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
After trading away Mac Jones, the Patriots have decided to bring back a familiar face and signed Jacoby Brissett to a one-year $8 million deal. Brissett was a rookie the last time he played for the Patriots. Since 2016, Brissett has played for four teams with the majority of his time playing for the Colts.
During that span, Brissett had three seasons where he threw for over 2,600 yards and had double-digit touchdowns. For his career across five teams, the veteran quarterback has tallied up 10,574 passing yards, 915 rushing yards, 66 total touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. Last season, Brissett was mainly a back-up for the Commanders only appearing in three games.
Looking ahead to the Fall, Brissett should fill the need for a stop-gap quarterback for the Patriots. With New England surely addressing their quarterback needs with the third-overall pick in the NFL draft next month, Brissett could be a great mentor and bridge until the rookie quarterback is ready. Brissett should only be acquired in deep two-quarterback and super-flex leagues, as he only has Bailey Zappe standing in his way for being the starter heading into off-season training activities.
Jacoby Brissett will get his chance to start in week 17 for the Commanders in the place of Sam Howell.
After throwing eight interceptions in his last five games Sam Howell has been benched by head coach Ron Rivera. Jacoby Brissett will start for Washington in week 17 after finding success in multiple relief appearances. This will come as a surprise for many fantasy managers with Sam Howell currently sitting as the QB10 in fantasy football leagues. However, much of that production came on volume as he has struggled with decision-making.
After looking like Washington’s potential franchise quarterback, The Commanders’ will almost certainly be looking in a different direction in 2023. They currently are projected to have the No.3 pick in the NFL draft, giving them a great opportunity to select a talented quarterback. Either way, they will certainly bring in competition leaving Howell as the likely backup.
Unfortunately for fantasy managers this weekend Brissett will face off against the 49ers making him only a desperation superflex option. However, this does spell good news for Terry McLaurin. McLaurin struggled to get on the same page as Howell, but has a clear lead in target share with Brissett on the field the last two weeks. Look for McLaurin to be a solid WR2 in fantasy football championships this weekend.
