General Manager, John Schneider clarified the starting quarterback position.
Geno Smith had a fantastic year in 2022, setting career highs in all areas. This performance won him the starting quarterback position for 2023, as well as a new three-year, $75 million contract. He was also named Comeback Player of the Year for his successful season.
After falling short of expectations in 2023, the Seahawks decided to go in a different direction with the head coaching position. They let go of legendary coach Pete Carroll and hired Mike Macdonald as their new HC.
General Manager, John Schneider wanted to clarify the starting quarterback situation amidst some changes and uncertainty, stating that “He’s the starter until he’s not.”

The Seahawks are hiring defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald from the Baltimore Ravens.
The Pete Carroll Era has officially closed and the Seahawks are going from one of the oldest Head Coaches in Pete Carroll (72) to one of the youngest in Mike Macdonald. (36)
The Ravens’ unit was one of the top units in the NFL this season defensively. This season under Macdonald, the Ravens’ defense ranked first in sacks (60), first in fewest points allowed (16.5 per game), and sixth in yards allowed.
Macdonald has achieved great success and as a result, he has been offered the position of head coach in Seattle. Although the deal is still being negotiated, it is a done deal as any. Macdonald will be appointed as the head coach for Seattle in 2024. It will be interesting to see if Macdonald can bring back the glory years of the “Legion on Boom” in Seattle and continue his defensive success as a NFL head coach.
The Seattle Seahawks and Head Coach Pete Carroll have announced Carroll will no longer serve in the HC role.
In what appears to be an amicable split, Pete Carroll will no longer be the Head Coach of the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks released a statement stating that Carroll and the team have “agreed” that his “role will evolve” from HC to “advisor.”
The implications of the move are unknown, for now. The Seahawks’ veteran QB Geno Smith experienced a career renaissance in 2022 with Carroll, but struggled this past season after dealing with multiple injuries. Carroll has always been known as a defense-oriented HC, but the team moving to more of an offensive emphasis to utilize it’s young offensive weapons could benefit Smith, if he’s retained.
RBs Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet will be entering their 3rd and 2nd seasons, respectively, WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba will be a high-upside 2nd-year receiver with room to expand on his rookie season, and DK Metcalf finished 2023 with more yards and a higher yards-per-target than he has posted since 2020. The weapons are in place for Smith to return to Top 10 production in 2024 with a Ben Johnson type at the helm.
Geno Smith will return to the lineup in week 16 when the Seahawks face the Tennessee Titans.
Geno Smith has no injury designation after missing the past 2 games with a groin injury. The Seahawks, who are in the thick of the NFC wild card race will welcome their veteran .
Smith was the QB18 prior to his injury, so fantasy managers who drafted him hoping for a repeat of his 2022 campaign have been fairly disappointed with Smith thus far. Smith gets the Titans this week who rank 20th vs opposing QBs. Smith is in a good spot to return low end QB1 high end QB2 value, perfect as your QB2 in Superflex.
Drew Lock will make his first start since 2021 for Seahawks with Geno Smith nursing a groin injury.
Drew Lock is set to make his first start as a Seahawk. Geno Smith is currently dealing with a groin injury and won’t be available for the upcoming game against the 49ers. Therefore, Drew Lock is expected to start as a quarterback for the first time since 2021. However, it will not be an easy task as the game is scheduled to be played away from home and against a challenging opponent like the 49ers.
All pass-catchers should be slightly downgraded with Lock under center or at the very least temper expectations for players like D.K Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.
