Deshaun Watson OUT for the year; DTR Expected to Start
6 months ago

Deshaun Watson lands on IR ending his season.

Deshaun Watson’s standout performance in week 10, securing a close win in Baltimore, was followed by his placement on the IR, marking the end of his season. Watson, grappling with injuries since week 4, recently suffered a high ankle sprain and a rare shoulder fracture, necessitating immediate surgery.

The Browns face a challenging situation with their backup quarterbacks, both rookies and veterans, having struggled. Despite a shaky start by Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR), he is set to regain control of the offense, backed up by PJ Walker. Coach Kevin Stefanski believes in the potential growth of rookies, explaining DTR’s reinstatement.

While betting markets suggest unlikely scenarios like Tom Brady joining the Browns, the team, despite quarterback challenges, remains a formidable force in team football. However, the impact on fantasy is evident, with Amari Cooper experiencing a significant drop in points per game without Watson. Elijah Moore’s inconsistency also continues, highlighting the struggles of the Browns’ offense without their star quarterback.

Notably, David Njoku remains a consistent fantasy performer, retaining TE1 status. Until the backup quarterbacks demonstrate competence, caution is advised in starting both Cooper and Moore, who receive substantial downgrades in Watson’s absence. Cooper may serve as a boom-bust flex option, but expectations should be tempered.

Deshaun Watson ruled OUT week 4; Rookie DTR to Start
7 months ago

Deshaun Watson is ruled OUT week 4 Vs the Ravens

Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson had been practicing in a limited capacity all week. He did not throw much if any passes while nursing a shoulder injury but reassured us all week he would be ready to play Sunday. Turns out that was a lie. Watson will miss week 4s matchup Vs the Baltimore Ravens after evaluating his shoulder in warmup throws led to a meeting and subsequently a deactivation.

The injury to Watsons shoulder leads to a downgrade to the overall offense and pass catchers especially for Cleveland. Rookie QB Dorian Thompson Robinson will take over as the teams starting quarterback and although he had an impressive preseason real NFL action is much different (see Kenny Picket).

Dorian Thompson Robinson, AKA DTR, is a highly athletic young QB that has earned praise from the likes of Aaron Rodgers, and has shown promise early; but again this is a real NFL game against a divisional rival Baltimore Ravens squad that is hungry to get back on track after a devastating loss last week. The Ravens will make life difficult for DTR and his pass catchers are all downgraded in this game. Expect to see a lot more focus on the running game, with usage of DTR in that area as he runs a 4.56 forty yard dash and will be utilized in that fashion.

Browns Trade Dobbs to Cardinals, Shake Up QB Room

Browns Send Dobbs to Cardinals, Promote Thompson-Robinson to Backup QB.

The Cleveland Browns made a surprising move on Thursday, trading backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals for a fifth-round pick in 2024. Dobbs, who had been named the team’s No. 2 quarterback by coach Kevin Stefanski earlier in the day, will join the Cardinals, who are looking for a temporary replacement for injured starter Kyler Murray.

The trade means that rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who has impressed in the preseason, will be promoted to backup behind Deshaun Watson, the Browns’ starting quarterback. Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round pick from UCLA, has shown great potential and versatility in the Browns’ offense.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, are hoping that Dobbs can provide some stability and experience at the quarterback position while Murray recovers from knee surgery. Murray, having an MVP-caliber season before getting hurt, is expected to miss the entire 2023 season. Dobbs will compete with Colt McCoy, Clayton Tune, David Blough, and Jeff Driskel for the starting job in Arizona.
