Who is Davis Mills

After redshirting his freshman season, Davis Mills only played in one game and was the Cardinals backup in 2018. He entered the 2019 season as the Cardinals backup again but was forced into action and played eight games passing for 1,960 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was the team starting quarterback for his redshirt junior season. Due to COVID restrictions, Mills played in only five games. Mills college stats were below average as he averaged 7.8 yards per attempt and amassed a 77.4 College QBR. When forced with a decision to come back for his redshirt senior season or declare for the NFL draft, Mills decided to declare due to the uncertainty of how COVID would impact the upcoming season.

Davis Mills was invited to the 2021 NFL Combine and measured at a height of 6 feet 4 inches tall with a hand size of 9 ½ inches. He ran a below average 4.82 40 time at Stanford’s Pro Day and tested as a below average athlete registering a 89.5, 47-percentile, SPARQ-X score. Despite, poor college stats, and below average athletic testing, Mills was selected with the third pick in the third round of the NFL draft by the Houston Texans.

Mills began his rookie season as the Texans backup but was quickly pressed into action in week 2 after an injury to the Texans starter Tyrod Taylor. Mills exceeded expectations as rookie but overall failed to have any real fantasy impact finishing as the QB28 in fantasy points per game. He finished the season with a 80.7 True passer rating and a 35.6 QBR, which both fall outside the top 20 among qualified quarterbacks. However, Mills was highly efficient in completing deep balls with a 44.2-percent Deep Ball Completion percentage and posted a +6.1 Production Premium.

Davis Mills status with the Texans is on shaky ground despite being on his rookie contact. It is highly likely the Texans add a quarterback to compete with Mills moving forward. It is even more likely that Mills will have minimal fantasy impact moving forward.
