Who is Alvin Kamara

The Saints made Alvin Kamara the 67th overall draft pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, and his ascent to football stardom hasn’t slowed down since. He carries the distinct honor of being the first running back in NFL history to post 500 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in each of their first four seasons, and is tied with running back Ernie Nevers for the most rushing touchdowns in a single game (6).

Despite a 60th-percentile 40 time (4.56), Kamara is one of the most explosive running backs in the NFL with a 132.7 burst score. During his first three years in the league he caught exactly 81 passes in each individual season, and has caught 373 passes for his career. The former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year has twice been named Second-team All-Pro and has been voted to the Pro Bowl in each of his five seasons in the league.

When it comes to Kamara and fantasy football, what stands out most is his ability to maximize opportunities and turn them into fantasy points. He has twice finished in the top-10 in fantasy points per touch and was first in fantasy points per touch in 2020 (1.29) while averaging 25.2 fantasy points per game.

Having made a name for himself as an elite pass-catcher, Kamara led all RBs in target share last season (20.2%) and route participation (67.2%) and was also top-10 in receiving yards (439) and receptions (47). Kamara ranked 13th amongst running backs with 240 routes run but was second in the league with eight drops. He is a master with the ball in his hands, and totaled 788 yards created following missed or broken tackles and earned the third-highest dominator amongst RBs in 2021 when he accounted for 31.5% of his team’s total offensive production.

Kamara has been a mainstay in the Saints’ offense for years. Finding multiple ways to score whether by land or by air, former head coach Sean Payton regularly deployed Kamara to find paydirt and put points on the board. Having never finished worse than a fantasy ranking of RB8 in fantasy points per game, and entering his age 27 season, Kamara should have years of fantasy production left in him. He averages just over 250 total touches per year, and surprisingly has less wear and tear than other running backs most would regard as elite in both real and fantasy football. His ADP will be that of a top back, but one we should feel safe with drafting in 2022. Kamara is under contract with the Saints through the 2025 season.
