Mike Evans appeared to injure his oblique area today during the 49ers game against the Cardinals and needed to be carted off.

Evans left the game after putting together a strong first half, hauling in 3 catches for 34 yards and a touchdown before taking a direct helmet shot to his oblique area, which caused him to leave the game before ultimately being carted off to the locker room. Head coach Kyle Shanahan later told the media that the team does not yet know the exact extent of the injury, noting they couldn’t immediately tell if it was a broken rib or an oblique issue, with further clarity expected following tests on Monday.

 

 

With Evans sidelined, quarterback Brock Purdy leaned heavily on George Kittle, who paced the passing attack with 6 catches, 82 yards, and two touchdowns. Assuming Evans misses significant time, and with Demarcus Robinson on injured reserve, the 49er WR corps could be more shorthanded than usual. The only other active receivers on the roster today were Jacob Cowling (2 targets), Jordan Watkins (0 targets), and Khadarel Hodge (0 targets), although the team did recently sign veteran Brandin Cooks to the practice squad.

49ers De’Zhaun Stribling caught 7-of-8 targets (88% catch rate) for 62 yards in his first preseason game against the Titans.

San Francisco second-round rookie De’Zhaun Stribling demonstrated versatile alignment across slot and perimeter roles during preseason action. Armed with 4.36 40-yard dash speed (96th percentile) and strong contested-target skills, the rookie displayed full health following his early August hamstring strain.

 

Stribling (formerly Swindling) is poised for a significant Year 1 route participation rate, and his run-after-catch ability positions him for year-one fantasy FLEX viability. Stribling is ranked as PlayerProfiler’s WR66 in redraft formats and rising.

The Athletic’s Vic Tafur observed that Ricky Pearsall is not practicing because of knee swelling and there is “some concern” he will need season-ending surgery.

This is ominous. Matt Maiocco’s follow-up report stated that Ricky Pearsall is dealing with the same PCL tear that plagued him last year. The 49ers believed it would fully heal with offseason rest, but their beleaguered medical staff were wrong. San Francisco must now determine whether Pearsall requires surgery to properly repair the ligament.

 

Pearsall, who boasts upper percentile athleticism and some tantalizing spike weeks, is tumbling down draft boards as lingering knee swelling threatens to derail a second straight season. With veteran Christian Kirk also sidelined after registering a paltry 6.7-percent Target Share last year, a bucket of targets in San Francisco are up for grabs.

 

Pearsall’s health concerns open the door for rookie De’Zhaun Stribling, who features a 100.4 Speed Score, to lock down No. 2 wideout duties and push for fantasy football FLEX consideration in 2026. For the first time, Stribling (WR59) has overtaken Pearsall (WR63) on PlayerProfiler’s Dynasty Rankings.

With the last pick in Round 4, the San Francisco 49ers select Jordan Watkins out of Ole Miss, adding another speedy receiver.

The San Francisco 49ers lost Deebo Samuel this offseason in a trade to Washington. At No. 138 of the NFL Draft, they picked up Jordan Watkins, receiver from Mississippi, who ran a 4.37 40-yard dash at the combine.

 

However, with Brandon Aiyuk due back at some stage in the season, George Kittle, Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, and a healthy Christian McCaffrey, it’s very hard to see a rookie from Day 3 seeing any relevance.

 

Interestingly, all the receivers in Round 4 ran in the 4.30s for the 40-yard dash except Jalen Royals and Elic Ayomanor (who still ran low-4.4). Let’s call Round 4 the speed round.
