Former 3rd overall draft pick from the 2021 NFL Draft Trey Lance shines in the Hall of Fame game.
Remember 2021 NFL Draft pick Trey Lance? He is now the back up for the Los Angeles Chargers and shined in his first preseason game with them. Lance threw for 120 yards, while completing 13/20. He also added 2 passing touchdowns as well. His first touchdown went to tight end Will Dissly on a 4 & 2 play. He also connected with rookie wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith on a 15-yard pass. In addition to his passing game, he added 8 yards on the ground as well.
Lance perhaps viewed as a bust never got things going with the 49ers. In his rookie year he was the back up to Jimmy Garoppolo but did appear in 6 games. In his second season he started the season as the 49ers’ starting quarterback and played first game in a monsoon, followed by getting injured which costed him the season and eventually his job to Brock Purdy. Which led to him being traded to the Dallas Cowboys and signing this past offseason with the Chargers.
For fantasy if anything were to ever happen to Justin Herbert, Trey Lance should be an add right away with his rushing ability and perhaps getting another opportunity in the league if all goes well.

The NFL opened up their preseason schedule with the annual Hall of Fame Game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions.
The Hall of Fame game was the Trey Lance show, he went 13/20 for 120 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Will Dissly and Chargers rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith. Lambert-Smith caught two passes for 43 yards and that touchdown, building on his strong showings in training camp. Last year’s 6th round pick Kimani Vidal also punched in two touchdowns for the Chargers.
Detroit Lions third round rookie Isaac TeSlaa made a few nice plays grabbing two passes for 46 yards. Craig Reynolds carried the load in the backfield for the Lions taking 10 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown.
The Chargers defense and special teams looked at the top of their game as they kicked off the NFL preseason, recording five turnovers. TeSlaa and Lambert-Smith were the most notable fantasy relevant performances, expect to see each of them start to go off the board in the later rounds of drafts.

Trey Lance Joins the Chargers: What It Means for Fantasy Football
Trey Lance is returning to California, this time with the Los Angeles Chargers, after agreeing to a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million. While Justin Herbert remains firmly entrenched as the team’s starter, Lance’s arrival adds an intriguing layer to the Chargers’ quarterback room. Competing with veteran Taylor Heinicke for the backup role, Lance’s athleticism and rushing ability, evidenced by his 276 career rushing yards and one rushing touchdown, could make him an appealing low-risk, high-reward option in deep dynasty leagues or as a potential stash if Herbert were to miss time. Although Lance’s on-field performance has been inconsistent, his dual-threat potential gives him a shot at carving out fantasy value, particularly in superflex or two-QB leagues.
Since being drafted third overall by the 49ers in 2021, Lance has struggled with injuries and limited opportunities, including a forgettable stint with the Cowboys. With just 1,063 passing yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions in 12 games, Lance’s fantasy appeal has primarily come from his rushing ability. If he can secure a meaningful role behind Herbert, Lance could emerge as a viable emergency fill-in for fantasy managers, especially in formats that reward rushing stats for quarterbacks. However, until he shows significant development, Lance is likely best left on the waiver wire in standard leagues.

San Fransisco traded quarterback Trey Lance to Dallas Cowboys for 2024 fourth-round pick
After much speculation, Trey Lance has been traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2024 fourth-round pick. The writing appeared on the wall for Lance after falling to No. 3 on the depth chart behind teammates Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold. He will now look for a fresh start and learn behind veteran quarterback Dak Prescott. Given the state of the Cowboys’ depth chart, Lance will step in and immediately take over the backup quarterback duties.
Between college and the NFL, Lance has attempted fewer than 500 passes. Whether it be having his 2020 collegiate season canceled or injuries, luck hasn’t been on the side of the young quarterback. Regardless, the 49ers haven’t seen enough practice this off-season to feel confident giving him playing time. They traded him for pennies on the dollar instead after spending three first-round picks to move up in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately, Lance’s fantasy football value going forward looks bleak. He has two years left on his rookie contract, and he will be playing behind one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Given Lance’s age, he still has a chance to resurrect his career as a number of quarterbacks have had success later in their careers. However, this doesn’t make him more than a dynasty fantasy football stash, and his 2023 value will be minimal barring injury to Dak Prescott.
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy has been cleared to practice in full and is already working back into his role as starter.
Brock Purdy suffered a torn UCL in his elbow in the NFC Championship and has spent the offseason recovering from surgery. The initial timeline had Purdy returning in early September, a timeline that Mr. Irrelevant crushed. Purdy will begin Training Camp by taking every third day off from throwing but is working with the First Team alongside Trey Lance and Sam Darnold.
Brock Purdy averaged 19.63 fantasy points across the seven games he started and finished, which would rank as the QB7 in PPG, behind Lamar Jackson and ahead of Kyler Murray. The 49ers have been adamant that Purdy will have the inside track to the starting job when healthy.
With a full training camp ahead of him to work out the kinks, Purdy is a lock to start Week 1. His backup could very well be Sam Darnold with Trey Lance trade rumors swirling throughout the offseason.
