HC Jerod Mayo Calls Patriots' Wide Receiver Room "Wide-Open"

In reference to the tumultuous nature of New England’s receiving corps, first-year head coach Jerod Mayo said “guys will have opportunities” and that there is “a wide-open competition” for roster spots.

With offseason organized team activities beginning across the NFL this week, incoming rookies are finally getting the chance to prove themselves against veteran players. For the New England Patriots, newcomers such as Drake Maye — the franchise’s hopeful quarterback of the future — and wide receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker will have an opportunity to make a big first impression on their new boss.

Although Maye and Polk, in particular, were both high draft choices selected within the top 40, it sounds like they’ll have to earn the trust of Jerod Mayo in order to earn themselves a role come September. When discussing the receivers’ room specifically, Mayo said, “It’s a wide-open competition. We have some young bulls, we have some older players, we have guys who are really unproven, so this is an opportunity for them to really get a leg up, going forward.” Mayo also made it clear that the absence of presumptive starter Kendrick Bourne — still recovering from a torn ACL sustained during a Week 8 loss to the Miami Dolphins last season — will undoubtedly open up opportunities for both Polk and Baker, among others.

Although New England attacked its pressing needs on offense during the draft, this is still a group you will want to avoid in fantasy. While Bourne (when healthy) merits consideration as a FLEX option in deeper formats, it’s still unknown as to who the signal-caller in Foxborough will be come Week 1. Maye will certainly elevate the ceiling of the Patriots’ wideouts once he enters the fold, but the timing is still unknown. Until then, Polk and Baker can be seen as mid-to-late-round dynasty assets, while Bourne and second-year man DeMario Douglas are safer short-term bets with Brissett under center.

Javon Baker Selected By The New England Patriots With The 110th Pick
2 months ago

The New England Patriots have selected wide receiver Javon Baker from the University of Central Florida with the 110th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Baker spent his first two seasons at Alabama where he saw minimal playing time before transferring to UCF in 2022. In his two seasons at UCF, Baker caught 108 passes for 1,935 yards and 12 touchdowns and finished the 2023 season as a first team All-Big 12 Conference wide receiver.

At 6’1” and 208 lbs. he has the size to succeed on the outside in the NFL and has the downfield playmaking to match. He didn’t post the greatest 40-yard dash time at the combine with a 4.54 second time but he has a 37 inch vertical leap to make up for it. As Drake Maye’s new number one receiver, Baker has a huge opportunity to fantasy relevance tied to the rookie 3rd overall pick. You could see Baker get drafted as high as the early second round in rookie drafts and could create a fun best ball stack with his new quarterback.

Javon Baker Raising Eyebrows at the Combine
4 months ago

Wide Receiver Javon Baker is looking to continuing raising his stock at the NFL Combine.

Javon Baker has been a player on the rise since arriving at the NFL combine. The former UCF Knight measured in at 6′-1″ and 202lbs, and was able to lay down a respectable 4.54 40-yard dash. Baker had an impressive 7.93 RAS score, which will start making NFL General Managers and dynasty managers start drooling over his skill set.

Baker started breaking out in his final two seasons at UCF, after transferring from Alabama. Although he had four more receptions as a junior with 56, the talented wide receivers was able to illustrate his big play ability. Baker averaged 21.9 yards per reception, and totaled 1,109 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

Look for Baker to continuing turn heads during the NFL Draft process. I believe Baker will be able raise his draft value and be a Day 2 pick in the NFL. If he lands in a great spot, dynasty managers would be wise to snatch him up in the second round of rookie drafts if he is still available when you are on the clock.
