The New York Jets met with Aaron Rogers to discuss the future of their quarterback room. While it’s too soon to tell who will be the long-awaited answer at QB, the team informed Rodgers they will be parting ways.
Say what you will about Aaron Rodgers, but say that he will be an NFL legend for years to come. While the Jets 3-year, $75M guaranteed, contract with Rodgers ended a total bust, I can’t blame them for shooting their shot. Rodgers is a Super Bowl winning, 4 time MVP, 10 time pro-bowl Quarterback — and the Jets just witnessed another Legend at the position take his team to the playoffs at age 45. Sadly, Rodgers missed his first year with an injury and then never looked like the same MVP Aaron Rodgers since. I think the Jets made the correct move to part ways and look to the future.
The Jets do not have a Quarterback of consequence on the roster and will need to sign a free agent and also take a stab at an incoming rookie. Ironically enough the best available free agent would be Sam Darnold, who started his career as the 2018 NFL Drafts 3rd overall pick to the Jets. Signing Darnold would let them have a shot at drafting the highest rated WR in this class, Tetairoa McMillan — who would pair well with Garrett Wilson and would allow Davante Adams to fulfill his annual trade-me-to-another-team ritual. Alternatively the team could court one of Russell Wilson or Justin Fields as an intermediate option while they wait for a future franchise QB draft pick. This year pick 7 is probably too late for Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, and while it might seem too early for Jaxon Dart, I doubt he will fall to the Jets at pick 42. My money is on Dart to the Jets Round 1.
