Below, Matty Kiwoom begins his 2026 NFL Draft previews with Stage 1 Scouting Series: Jonah Coleman.
Background
Jonah Coleman, a stout and explosive running back from Washington, is a rising star in the college football landscape. He reps the 209 (just like the Diaz brothers), hailing from Stockton, California. Coleman brings a compact and powerful frame to the Huskies’ backfield at a listed 5-9 and 229 pounds. Despite his shorter stature, his thick build allows him to absorb contact and bounce off defenders with ease.
He transferred to Washington before the 2024 campaign, looking to make a big impact, and early signs suggest he’s well on his way. Coleman plays with a physical edge and a low center of gravity, which makes it difficult for him to be brought down in space. His blend of power and surprising agility gives him a unique skill set among college backs.
2024 Breakout
In 2024, Coleman proved to be a dynamic offensive weapon, rushing for 1,060 yards and catching 23 passes out of the backfield. He found the end zone 10 times and constantly created explosive plays, recording 13 breakaway runs.
Perhaps most impressively, he forced 67 missed tackles on the season without putting the ball on the turf a single time. His ability to remain balanced through contact and shake defenders in the open field made him one of the most fun players in the country to watch. His combination of reliability and playmaking was key to Washington’s offensive success.
What to Expect in 2025
Looking ahead to 2025, Coleman enters the season in the best shape of his career. He’s reportedly down to around 220 pounds and 12 percent body fat. The early buzz out of the program is that he looks more explosive than ever. He’s poised for another 1,000-yard rushing campaign. If Coleman can continue to refine his receiving skills and pass protection, he’ll elevate his stock even further.
2026 NFL Draft Potential
Coleman is currently projected as a potential Day 2 pick. However, he has a legitimate shot to sneak into the back end of Round 1 with another standout year. I’ll be watching closely to see how he handles a heavier workload and whether he can sustain his production at a lighter weight. If he does, Coleman will enter the 2026 NFL Draft as one of the most complete backs in the class.
