49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is not expecting Brock Purdy to be ready for Week 2 against the Saints. He is calling it a long shot and backup Mac Jones is expected to get the start.

The news is another hit for the 49ers as they recently lost George Kittle for the next 3-5 weeks due to a hamstring injury. Jauan Jennings has dealt with calf and shoulder injuries recently, but should be ready for Week 2.

This shift Jones will exercise the thought experiment of whether or not Jones would have thrived were he to be drafted by the 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft. The next logical question will be the duration of Purdy’s absence. Right now, things are looking bleak for the offense as a whole. In the meantime, receiver Ricky Pearsall and running back Christian McCaffrey are about to be fed buffet style and are weekly must starts.
