Chargers Wide Receivers Bolt Out of the Gates
2 months ago

Los Angeles Chargers’ Wide Receivers Quentin Johnston and Keenan Allen are currently both top 12 receivers after the first 2 weeks. Ladd McConkey sits at WR37.

What is going on in LA? All anyone was talking about this fantasy offseason was how Jim Harbaugh, run-first coach that he is, was going to lean heavily on free agent acquisition Najee Harris and 1st round stud Omarion Hampton. Oh yeah, and Ladd McConkey was going to soak up whatever targets there were to be had, and that we should fade every other Chargers pass catcher.

Well, after two crazy weeks, the Chargers have completely flipped the script, making fantasy superstars out of Quentin Johnston and Keenan Allen, all the while shunning McConkey and Hampton into fantasy irrelevancy. What’s more is that the team is 2-0 after dominating divisional opponents in back-to-back weeks. If it isn’t broken, why fix it?

Oh, but it’s a long season, and those of us who drafted Ladd and Hampton, though we may be feeling somewhat let down, shouldn’t panic just yet. We drafted these guys high for a reason and can expect them to have brighter days ahead. If anything, now seems like a perfect window to buy McConkey, who, though he’s underperformed, has still had double-digit fantasy points in each game. Hampton’s situation is a little more concerning, although he’s too talented and the team spent too high a pick on him to neglect him for long.

Dynasty Faller: Keenan Allen

Keenan Allen is one of the top fallers in PlayerProfiler’s Dynasty Deluxe lifetime value rating for the month of August.

Allen exploded last season, ranking third among NFL receivers with 21.5 fantasy points per game. But his age, new team, and increased target competition, coupled with a rookie quarterback, dim his outlook. Sustaining three fantasy-relevant receivers in one offense is challenging, especially with a high draft pick like Rome Odunze and proven talent D.J. Moore on the roster.

Allen remains a household name due to his past dominance. However, his current situation is risky. To avoid this uncertainty and build a sustainable dynasty roster, consider trading Allen to a win-now team enticed by his recent production.

Keenan Allen Traded to Chicago

The Los Angeles Chargers have acquired a 4th round pick from the Chicago Bears for veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen.

Keenan Allen is now a Chicago Bear. The LA Chargers traded him away for a 4th round pick, to save $23.1 million in cap space. The team offered a restructure, but the University of California Golden Bears alum declined. Allen is, by receptions and yards, the best wide receiver in Chargers history.

Allen was a 3rd round draft pick and didn’t fully break out until his 5th season, the first in which he played in all of the Chargers’ scheduled games. In that season, 2017, Allen finished with 1393 receiving yards on 102 catches and 6 TDs, placing him as fantasy WR3. He followed 2017 with 4 straight seasons over 96 catches and over 990 yards, never being ranked outside of the PPR Top 14. An injury hampered his 2022 season, but Allen returned in 2023, at age 31, to Top 10 prominence with 108 catches and 1243 receiving yards in just 13 games.

Allen has been a solid wide receiver to draft in the early rounds, and a valuable fantasy asset, for the last 7 years, but has been injured the last two seasons and will arrive in Chicago with questions about reliability, where he fits in the WR room, and who his QB will be. Allen has been blessed to be a primary receiver for two big-arm quarterbacks in high volume offenses. Apart from backups, Allen has helped the fortunes of Philip Rivers, and been a veteran stud for young Justin Herbert. It is widely speculated that Chicago will use the first pick in the 2024 draft to select USC QB Caleb Williams, and also trying to find a trade partner for incumbent starter Justin Fields. Additionally, the Bears’ receiving corps includes Alpha dog DJ Moore, a Top 10 TE in Cole Kmet, and Chargers teammate Gerald Everett who is not necessarily fantasy relevant, but has been good for over 40 catches and 400 yards in each of the last 4 seasons.

Keenan Allen will be in the Gold Jacket conversation when his career is over.

Keenan Allen Ruled OUT for Week 16; Joshua Palmer Remains Top Option
1 year ago

LA Chargers WR Keenan Allen has been ruled out for Week 16 vs Buffalo.

The LA Chargers season has not gone to plan. After bringing in Kellen Moore as the new OC to take QB Justin Herbert to the next level, and drafting WR Quentin Johnston, the Chargers have been one of the NFL’s biggest disappointments. RB Austin Ekeler dealt with injuries early on and hasn’t returned to normal levels of fantasy production, WR Mike Williams landed on the IR, and WR Joshua Palmer was lost to the IR, for a time, himself. Palmer will return in Week 15 but the hardships continue.

Palmer’s return should be seen as a nice addition but Justin Herbert was placed on the IR after surgery to fix a fractured finger and WR Keenan Allen was declared OUT after missing all of the short-week’s practices with a heel injury. Palmer now becomes a replacement rather than a boon.

Replacement QB Easton Stick will, in fact, have Palmer to throw to, but he will also look to spark the breakout of rookie WR Johnston. The pair hooked up late in Week 14 for two deep plays, hinting that the loss of Allen might not be as terrible as one would think. Stick, Palmer, and Johnston are all viable options vs the Raiders.

WEEK 16 UPDATE:

Allen remains out. Palmer is the WR1 for LAC.
