VJ Payne Bio

VJ Payne

VJ Payne is a safety and 2026 NFL Draft prospect who played his entire collegiate career with the Kansas State Wildcats. A native of Gainesville, Georgia, Payne attended Buford High School, where he helped the Wolves win three consecutive state championships and was rated a three-star recruit in the 2022 class before choosing Kansas State over Power Five offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Michigan, Michigan State, USC, and Vanderbilt. He made an immediate impact as a true freshman in 2022, becoming the first Kansas State defensive player to start a season opener since at least 1988, logging four starts including the Big 12 Championship against TCU and the Sugar Bowl against Alabama. Over four seasons he developed into one of the most experienced defensive backs in the conference, finishing his career with 207 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, and 10 pass breakups across 52 games and 42 starts, earning Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors in both 2024 and 2025 and earning an invitation to the 2026 East-West Shrine Bowl.

Standing 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds with elite straight-line speed, Payne is known for his rare combination of size, range in deep coverage, and football intelligence that allows him to read route concepts pre-snap and position himself to limit explosive plays. His best football comes in zone coverage where his length, ball-tracking ability, and spatial awareness allow him to cover tight ends and large slot receivers that present matchup problems for smaller safeties, and NFL evaluators project him as a coverage-first safety with the athleticism and versatility to play multiple spots in the secondary and develop into a multi-year starter in a defense that rotates coverages and values range at the position.
