Diontae Johnson billed as Primary Target by Canales

Diontae Johnson is going to be featured in new Panthers offense based on comments from Panthers Head Coach Dave Canales.

Diontae Johnson arrived in Carolina with a reputation as a target earner and one of the leagues best route runners.  As training camp has opened for the Carolina Panthers their head coach has designs on making him a focal point of their offense.  While addressing the media, Canales pointed out that he has plans to make Diontae the primary feature of his passing attack.

 

Canales has successfully revived the careers of Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield in consecutive seasons, so this bit of information on what to expect from the Panthers passing attack should not be taken lightly.  Diontae Johnson is currently a massive value as the current wr43 on underdog in best ball drafts.  If he sees the type of volume he was accustomed to with an expected leap from 2nd year QB Bryce Young, he could be a league winner available in the middle round of your fantasy drafts.

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik is hyped and ready for Diontae Johnson to take on the X role at wide receiver in 2024.

Diontae Johnson didn’t leave on the best terms when the Pittsburgh Steelers traded him to the Carolina Panthers this offseason. Mike Tomlin has a good track record of parting with wide receivers once their best days have been had. In Carolina, Johnson is seeking to change that pattern with new offensive coordinator Brad Idzik.

 

In a behind the scenes video, coach Idzik can be seen talking with Diontae Johnson about wanting Johnson to be the X receiver. Idzik spoke to defenses needing to respect Johnson with confidence that Johnson can make teams pay for not putting their best defenders on him. 

 

From 2020-2022 Diontae Johnson had 144, 169, and 146 targets respectively. He has been a target monster and PPR value as a perfect third receiver on fantasy rosters. With more touchdown equity to match target volume, Diontae Johnson is a player that could easily be a top 12 wide receiver in fantasy football. It simply has not all come together for him.

 

Currently, Diontae Johnson is the 45th wide receiver being drafted on UnderDog in round 7. At age 27, he is ranked 42nd in our Dynasty wide receiver rankings. Diontae Johnson is a buy in both Best Ball and Dynasty as his cost perfectly reflects and balances his past output with potential to yield large dividends.

The Panthers go mining for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson via trade.

The Carolina Panthers have traded for Diontae Johnson and a 7th round pick while the Steelers are receiving defensive back Donte Jackson and a 6th round pick. The Pittsburgh Steelers have an eye for talent in drafting and developing wide receivers and were internally ready to get rid of Diontae Johnson. If Mike Tomlin has run out of patience with you, then chances are you are at fault.

 

On the surface, it appeared that the Carolina Panthers didn’t have much going for them offensively in 2023. Bryce Young to Adam Thielen was PPR gold in 2023. Last season, Adam Thielen ranked 9th overall in receptions with 103. This plays directly into Diontae Johnson’s game. In successive years from 2020-2022, Diontae ranked 6th, 2nd, and 6th in targets for wide receivers posting 144, 169, and 147 targets respectively.

 

Diontae Johnson gets a clean slate, and the Panthers protect their 33rd pick in the draft. With Tee Higgins drama unfolding in Cincinnati, the Carolina Panthers are a prime candidate to inquire for the star wide receiver. Keep an eye on the Carolina Panthers as David Tepper is pushing for the Panthers to make more moves beyond this trade for Diontae Johnson.

Pittsburgh WR Diontae Johnson put on short term IR.

Bad news for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Diontae Johnson fantasy managers everywhere, WR Diontae Johnson has been placed on short term IR. Johnson had sustained the dreaded hamstring strain in week 1 and we had been monitoring reports and knew he was in line to miss at least a couple of weeks. Now we have it officially that he will miss at least the next 4 weeks on short term IR.

Pittsburgh will have to navigate at least 4 weeks without their best WR Diontae Johnson. The earliest fantasy managers can expect Diontae back is week 7. This news comes ahead of a Monday night contest week 2 Vs the Cleveland Browns. All eyes will be on the Pittsburgh O to find out who will emerge to soak up all the targets left behind by the perennial 140+ target man Diontae Johnson.

 

Will this be the opportunity Pickens managers have been hoping for? Will the Allen Robinson truthers prevail? Or will the Calvin Austin stans win the night? All eyes will be on the WR core and where sophomore QB Kenny Picket goes, but the second-leading receiver in targets from last year will be the one to continue to surprise, it is Pat Freiermuth season. Coming off a tough matchup Week 1 against the stout 49ers defense in which he left early, Pat Freiermuth is ready for a bounce back. Kenny Pickett’s most trusted target will be Pat Freiermuth once again.

Diontae Johnson to miss multiple weeks with Hamstring injury

Pittsburgh WR Diontae Johnson injured his hamstring week 1 versus the San Francisco 49ers and is now expected to miss multiple weeks opening up opportunities for other pass catchers in Pittsburgh to emerge.

Week 1 of the NFL season is back, and so are the injuries. Unfortunately for the Pittsburgh Steelers after a poor showing in the home opener against the vaunted 49ers Defense injury was added to insult with WR Diontae Johnson joining the litany of players who have sustained hamstring injuries early on this season.

 

Already down 27-7 early in the 3rd quarter Diontae Johnson made a big catch for 26yds but strained his hamstring in the process. Following the injury the Steelers turned to veteran WR Allen Robinson to fill the void as he saw an increased target share in the second half and ended the game with the most targets and yards on the Steelers posting an 8 target 5 catch 64 yard game. other notable WRs for the Steelers were sophomore WRs George Pickens 5-7 for 36 yards, and Calvin Austin 6-6 for 37 yards.

 

It was a difficult week 1 matchup for the Steelers O so there should be no surprise that second year QB Kenny Pickett failed to continue his hot play from the preseason. Fantasy managers should not be afraid to start pass catchers on the Steelers because of the week 1 let down. Now with the target hog Diontae Johnson out of the lineup for possibly multiple weeks per Adam Schefter, fantasy managers who believe in the talent of George Pickens should be starting him in lineups with confidence. For those who have reservations on the second year wideout, we will be watching. Allen Robinson saw the biggest bump in targets post Diontae injury and Calvin Austin has shown he can be an explosive playmaker on O for the Steelers. With all the injuries in the league, both players are viable waiver wire adds and flex candidates as long as Diontae is out.
