New Orleans Saints second year quarterback Spencer Rattler has looked a lot better than 2025 second round pick Tyler Shough.
Spencer Rattler has looked like the best quarterback at New Orleans Saints training camp so far, outplaying 2025 40th overall pick Tyler Shough. Rattler has said he feels like the best quarterback on the field.
Chris Olave, Alvin Kamara and Rashid Shaheed will likely be dealing with quarterback turmoil throughout the season. The Saints are likely to start multiple quarterbacks this season and it looks like Rattler currently has the edge to begin the season atop the depth chart.
New Orleans will want to get a look at Shough at some point this season, he’s been a late round selection in fantasy drafts and this report won’t help his stock. Olave, Kamara and Shaheed have all been selections inside the top 110 of fantasy drafts even with the quarterback uncertainty accounted for.

The Saints sign quarterback Tyler Shough to a 4-year rookie deal with $10.795 million guaranteed.
The New Orleans Saints have come to an agreement with rookie quarterback Tyler Shough. The Louisville alum spent 6 seasons in college and will enter the NFL a few months shy of his 26th birthday.
The Saints haven’t been able to find a franchise quarterback since Drew Brees retired in 2021. The trajectory of the franchise has since been stagnant due to team building and salary cap restrictions. By being selected in round 2, Shough should get an immediate chance to play in order for the Saints to determine whether they need to go back to the well at quarterback in next year’s NFL Draft.
Shough can be had in round 18 on Underdog. Star running back, Alvin Kamara can be had in round 5 while wide receiver Chris Olave has an ADP in round 6. With the Saints in transition, don’t be surprised if one or both of Kamara and Olave find a new team in season via a trade. What looks somewhat decent from a fantasy perspective can change in a matter of months.

New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr retired from the NFL due to his shoulder injury.
The New Orleans Saints finally got clarity when Derek Carr announced his retirement from the NFL. About a month earlier, reports surfaced that Derek Carr was expected to miss the 2025 NFL season due to a shoulder injury that surfaced in March. However, Derek Carr has opted to not have surgery and instead retire from the NFL.
Carr played for 9 years with the Raiders before starting 27 games over two seasons with the Saints. Carr missed games at the end of the 2024 season due to the same shoulder injury that would eventually lead to his retirement.
Carr will reportedly still retain his $10 M signing bonus as a result of a contract restructure. Carr’s retirement will also benefit the Saints’ salary cap situation, saving them approximately $30M.
Expect 2nd round rookie QB Tyler Shough to get the first crack at the Saints starting position.

Former Louisville Quarterback Tyler Shough gets selected to the New Orleans Saints at pick 40 in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The New Orleans Saints have selected quarterback Tyler Shough with the 40th overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Shough, is nothing short of experience considering he was recruited from high school in 2018. Yes, you read that correct came out of high school in 2018, making him 25 years old as a rookie. He started his college career being the backup for Justin Herbert at Oregon. He was at Oregon for 3 years, followed up by 3 years at Texas Tech, and last year played for Louisville. In 2024, he led the Cardinals to an 8–4 record, throwing for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions over 12 games. Shough’s performance earned him a spot in the 2025 Senior Bowl.
The Saints decision to draft Shough reflects their commitment to securing a long-term solution at quarterback. He may be able to be in the perfect position to compete for starting reps if current starting quarterback Derek Carr’s injured shoulder keeps him out. All he will have to do is beat out Spencer Rattler.

NFL Quarterback rookie draft prospect Tyler Shough made a Top-30 visit with the New Orleans Saints.
In light of Derek Carr’s shoulder injury news, the Saints have expanded their options at quarterback for the 2025 season. The Saints brought in Tyler Shough for a Top-30 visit.
Shough, the 2024 Louisville starter, is getting mocked in the 3rd round. First round draft capital would certainly speak to increased confidence in his ability. Shough spent five seasons in college, bouncing around from Oregon and Texas Tech before finally landing in Louisville.
Shough doesn’t offer much in the way of rushing, only gaining 19 yards in twelve games as the starter in 2024. Shough finished no. 7 among the 2025 draft class QBs with an 87.7 PFF Pass Grade.
PlayerProfiler’s best comparable player for Shough is Davis Mills. Mills was a short-term starter for the rebuilding Texans, but ended up as a career backup. This feels like a similar pathway for Shough– even if he ends up with 1st round draft capital. The Saints hold picks no. 9 and no. 40. The best bet is that either the Saints spend no. 40 on Shough, or trade up with that pick into the back end of the first round. With no other meaningful Quarterback rostered behind Carr, a prospect like Shough would get a prime opportunity to start Week 1.
