Deontae Lawson is a linebacker and 2026 NFL Draft prospect who played his entire collegiate career at the University of Alabama. A native of Mobile, Alabama, Lawson attended Mobile Christian School where he was a dominant defensive force before earning consensus four-star recruiting recognition and the nod from the All-American Bowl. He chose Alabama over Georgia Tech, Texas A&M and other programs, then redshirted in 2021 before working into the rotation as a sophomore with 51 tackles. He emerged as a full-time starter as a redshirt sophomore in 2023 with 67 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and three sacks, and earned Third-Team All-SEC honors in 2024 with 76 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and two sacks before a torn ACL ended his season in October of that year. He returned for a fifth year in 2025, serving as a two-time team captain, one of just 16 in Alabama program history to earn that distinction twice, and led the Crimson Tide with 89 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks across 15 games.
Measured at 6-foot-2 and 228 pounds, Lawson is a long, rangy linebacker with legitimate coverage tools and the credentials of a proven defensive leader. His 4.6-second 40-yard dash and fluid movement skills allow him to flow sideline-to-sideline and carry tight ends and running backs in zone. He has demonstrated consistent improvement in his zone coverage awareness and eye discipline, and his ability to generate pressure through well-timed blitzes is an underrated element of his game. The knocks center on a frame that is somewhat undersized for a traditional Mike linebacker, an inconsistent tackle technique and a lack of elite closing speed. His two-time captain status at Alabama, more than 2,400 career defensive snaps and a green-dot leadership background position him as a Day Two to early Day Three prospect with starting upside for teams seeking a communicative, reliable veteran presence in the middle of the defense.
