Dane Key is a wide receiver and 2026 NFL Draft prospect who finished his collegiate career at the University of Nebraska after three seasons at the University of Kentucky. A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Key was a four-star recruit in the 2022 class and the top-rated prospect in the state, earning the Paul Hornung Award as Kentucky Player of the Year before committing to play for his hometown team. He made an immediate impact as a true freshman at Kentucky, setting a program record for touchdown catches by a freshman with six and earning Freshman All-Big Ten recognition. He followed that with seasons of 42 receptions for 636 yards and six touchdowns in 2023 and a career-high 47 catches for 715 yards and two touchdowns in 2024, finishing his Kentucky career fifth on the program's all-time receptions list and as one of its most reliable targets across three seasons. He transferred to Nebraska for his final season in 2025, catching 39 passes for 452 yards and five touchdowns in 13 games, tying for the team lead in scoring catches and surpassing 2,000 career receiving yards. His father played college football at Kentucky and his brother Devon played in the NFL.
Standing 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds with a 4.50-second 40-yard dash, Key is a physically developed boundary receiver who wins in contested situations with reliable hands, strong body positioning, and above-average red zone instincts. He is at his best on intermediate and back-shoulder routes where his size advantage over cornerbacks allows him to shield defenders and come down with catches in tight windows. His route tree and after-catch ability have been flagged as areas where NFL evaluators want to see further development, and he did not quite maximize the opportunity at Nebraska after the production step forward many anticipated. NFL teams project Key as a Day 3 or priority undrafted free agent candidate who brings a reliable set of skills, football DNA, and a Big Ten production resume that give him a legitimate path to competing for a depth receiver role on an NFL roster.
