Kyle Shanahan announced Brock Purdy will start at QB for the 49ers this Sunday; joining him is WR Ricky Pearsall
During the taping of “49ers Game Plan” on the NBC Bay Area affiliate, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan announced informally that starting QB Brock Purdy would be back under center for the 49ers on Sunday. The team travels to Arizona for a divisional showdown with new starter Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals.
The timing could not be better for San Fran (6-4), which has slipped to third in the NFC West behind the Seahawks and Rams (both 7-2), who will play one another in Los Angeles at the same time on Sunday. The team hopes that, as well as Mac Jones has played in his stead, their starter in Purdy is irreplaceable. Shanahan maintains there was “zero controversy” at the position. The team has brought their starter along slowly (he did not even dress as backup last week), suggesting that Sir Brocks-a-Lot should be all systems go.
Improving matters is that presumptive breakout No. 1 wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will also return to the field after an extended absence. He joins wideout Jauan Jennings and tight end George Kittle, who have each made their way back into the fold already.
Fantasy lowdown: If Purdy has been dropped in fantasy leagues, it won’t take long for him to be rostered in full again. The matchup with Arizona, which is ranked fifth against quarterbacks, isn’t the greatest to walk back into. However, a glance at the 49ers’ schedule suggests that they will be battling for the playoffs when their fantasy schedule wraps up against weak passing defenses, including Tennessee, Indianapolis, and Chicago, in weeks 15, 16, and 17, following a well-timed Week 14 bye.

It is looking like Mac Jones will be the Week 2 starter for the 49ers against the Saints.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is not expecting Brock Purdy to be ready for Week 2 against the Saints. He is calling it a long shot and backup Mac Jones is expected to get the start.
The news is another hit for the 49ers as they recently lost George Kittle for the next 3-5 weeks due to a hamstring injury. Jauan Jennings has dealt with calf and shoulder injuries recently, but should be ready for Week 2.
This shift Jones will exercise the thought experiment of whether or not Jones would have thrived were he to be drafted by the 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft. The next logical question will be the duration of Purdy’s absence. Right now, things are looking bleak for the offense as a whole. In the meantime, receiver Ricky Pearsall and running back Christian McCaffrey are about to be fed buffet style and are weekly must starts.

The San Francisco 49ers start the 2025 season dealing with injuries to some star players again.
Oh no, it’s happening again! Right after we held our collective breath that Christian McCaffrey was dealing with calf soreness, then breathing again when he played. The Niners leave week one of the season with a multiple week hamstring injury to star tight end George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy dealing with a shoulder and a toe injury. The injury curse has struck again. The team lost Brandon Aiyuk and McCaffrey for most of the season last year. Aiyuk is still recovering from the ACL injury. Jauan Jennings was dealing with a calf injury also. Luckily enough McCaffrey is ok. Let’s hope he can hold up until Kittle and Purdy can return.
Injuries to Purdy and Kittle could have been disastrous for the Niners if it weren’t for Christian McCaffrey. Mac Jones is the next man up at the helm and all he has to do is feed the ball to McCaffrey and make a few completions to Pearsall and Jennings to keep defenses honest. McCaffrey is the only safe fantasy option on offense until we see how Jones operates in this system. Let’s hope for a fast recovery for Purdy, Kittle and Ayuik so we can see this offense running on all cylinders.

Christian McCaffrey is added to the 49ers injury report with a calf issue.
Stop if you’ve heard this before, but 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has popped up on the 49ers injury report with a calf issue. Fantasy gamers don’t need much more to recall the scare that was last year where McCaffrey was a late scratch before Monday Night Football kicked off.
McCaffrey only played 4 games last year and didn’t make it back until Week 10. This is surely causing fantasy managers panic as McCaffrey has had glowing reports this offseason of looking like his prime self and being fully healthy.
The 49ers recently traded for Brian Robinson from the Washington Commanders. Suspicious fans will now wonder if Robinson was added with protection in mind in the event that McCaffrey misses time. Keep an eye on the Friday practice report as this late week injury report will cause ripple effects throughout the fantasy football landscape.

49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan says that wide receiver Jauan Jennings should play in Week 1.
Jauan Jennings has been dealing with a calf injury for the latter part of 49ers training camp. This has aligned with his demand for a new contract.
On the heels of the NFL season starting, Head Coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects Jennings to play Week 1 versus the Seattle Seahawks. It will be interesting to see the snap share for his first game back and whether or not any rust has developed. Timing early on will be important with quarterback Brock Purdy.
In the meantime, 2nd year wideout Ricky Pearsall has been tearing up preseason and building a rapport with Purdy. With Brandon Aiyuk still in recovery from injury, there is plenty of opportunity for 49ers skill position players who can merely stay on the field. The favorites in the offense will be veterans Christian McCaffrey (running back) and George Kittle (tight end). Jennings is best left on the bench for Week 1.

Wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall have been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform List by the 49ers.
The San Francisco 49ers have placed two of their top wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall, on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list. Aiyuk being placed on the PUP isn’t a surprise since he’s coming off a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus but seeing Pearsall added to the list raises some eyebrows.
This is particularly concerning because there other top wide receiver, Jauan Jennings, wants a new contract. If Jennings holds out that would leave Brock Purdy potentially not having all three of his top wide receivers for at least some portion of training camp.
Even with the contract concerns I’d expect Jennings ADP to rise a bit, Aiyuk probably won’t see a dip in his ADP because most drafters were already baking in the injury concerns. Pearsall is the surprise and without further clarity on the situation I’d expect him to fall down draft boards. The winners in this situation are George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, Kittle was already being drafted as an elite tight end option and he might start creeping up on Trey McBride now. CMC has been moving up the board steadily for months and he could approach the top five soon.
