How the Denver Broncos became a fantasy football wasteland

by _tim______ ·

What happened to the Broncos? Denver has become a fantasy wasteland this season. But don’t blame Emmanuel Sanders. All Sanders does is convert splash plays when called upon. While his teammates were flat-lining on their way to a fifth straight loss, Sanders’ QB rating when targeted was robust 104.2 last week.

This is in contrast to Demaryius Thomas who personifies the decline of the once-vaunted Denver Broncos offense. The Demaryius down escalator has been the most gradual in all of sports. With Peyton Manning at the peak of his powers, Thomas was a high end WR1, then a low end WR1, then he’s a high end WR2, then a low-end WR2. In 2025, he’ll be a low end WR6.

It’s easy to place blame on the quarterback position, but this is the Trevor Siemian we’ve always known. No one is surprised by Trevor Siemian’s inefficient play, except perhaps the delusional John Elway. Over time, the team you draft, is the team you get. The Broncos have failed to re-stock the roster in the NFL Draft each year since Elway arrived. Don’t blame Demaryius Thomas. Don’t blame Trevor Siemian. Broncos fans should blame the team’s struggles on John Elway, the most overrated front office executive in all of sports.
