Chris Johnson Bio

Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson is a cornerback and 2026 NFL Draft prospect who played all four seasons of his collegiate career at San Diego State. A native of Eastvale, California, Johnson was a three-star recruit in the 2022 class who chose the Aztecs over Boston College, Northwestern and Boise State. He contributed immediately as a true freshman in 2022, earning the team's Co-Outstanding Freshman Award before following that up with a bigger role in 2023 that brought the SDSU Special Teams Player of the Year award and earned him his first All-Mountain West mention. In 2024 he emerged as a full-time starter, posting 67 tackles, four pass breakups and a forced fumble while earning All-Mountain West Honorable Mention honors. His senior season in 2025 was historically dominant as he was named the Mountain West Co-Defensive Player of the Year and earned Second-Team All-American honors, limiting opposing quarterbacks to a 16.1 passer rating on passes targeting him, with zero touchdowns allowed on the season. He finished 2025 with 44 tackles, four interceptions, nine pass breakups and two defensive touchdowns while recording a 34.5% target-to-completion rate allowed, finishing second nationally in PFF coverage grade among cornerbacks. He totaled 152 tackles and six interceptions over his career.

Standing at 6-foot and 182 pounds with 30 5/8-inch arms and a 4.40-second 40-yard dash, Johnson is a technically polished and mentally advanced cornerback with scheme versatility across press man, off-man and zone coverage concepts. He processes route combinations rapidly, reads quarterback progressions with genuine anticipation and breaks on the ball with the timing of a veteran. His patient footwork and ability to mirror receivers through their release without overcommitting give him a smooth, controlled style that plays well across multiple coverage structures. He is also a physically committed run defender who will take on blockers and drive on ball carriers without hesitation, an underrated trait that broadens his schematic value. The primary concerns center on his level of competition in the Mountain West, his short arm length that could limit press-man effectiveness at the line against longer receivers, and questions about whether his footwork and quickness will hold up against the speed and precision of NFL wide receivers. He ran a 4.40 and posted elite athleticism testing at the NFL Combine, largely erasing the competition-level concerns, and most evaluations project him as a Day Two selection with starting upside at either outside corner or nickel.
